[ She pauses dramatically, waiting as seconds tick by. ]

[ Internal panic. So much freaking out, because it's out already and oh god she's not prepared for this, she just wants a little longer, it's too soon, she can't-

And then the ball drops, and the first thing Veronica hears is quiet, oh so relieved laughter. ]

Good morning, Charlie.

[ Damn it, why hadn't Veronica thought to do it audio only. She'll do better next time. She is determined. ]

Hello! I hope you don't mind, but Charlie stepped away from his radio. I'm Sharkpocalypse, here to fulfill all your Charlie needs.

You want a mission, angel?

[ And there with the confusion again. Semi-exposed secrets are confusing, okay? ]

Sharkpocalypse it is. What's the mission?

First off, are you one of the people that went into the woods trying to escape?

Because Sharkpocalypse couldn't go and wants to know what happened. Don't make me go all megalodon on people.

Yeah, I'm part of all of that.

[ She pauses a moment, but it's not like it can hurt, right? All the same, the feed switches to private anyway. ]

Bad, it was...really bad. Whoever's keeping us here has some heavy manpower behind them. No one died, at least I don't think so, but it was-

Yeah, bad.

[Veronica lets that sink in, her fists clenching. She doesn't think anyone died? She doesn't think so? Isn't that something those people had known?]

Why did you all go, anyway? Didn't you think someone might get hurt or killed?

[She doesn't actually need to ask. She knows why people went. They wanted to escape, and Sharon Carter had led them in with some half-cocked plan. Until now, Veronica had thought Kobra's grudge was silly. But maybe he's right. Maybe Sharon isn't the one who should be in charge. Not that Veronica would try to get rid of Sharon entirely. But there are ways to deal with someone without getting rid of them entirely.]

[ Good question, Veronica. Why the hell did she go? Because she needed to find her brother, or because these people deserved to try. Really, the only reason she joined in was to try and keep people safe, Anna has no desire to return if it means getting back to where they were before this place dragged them here. ]

I believe the majority were under the impression that it was worth the risk, to get home.

[ Was it though? What if she hadn't been there, what if she hadn't gotten to Jesse and Galen in time? What if they hadn't had angels on their side? She should have known better, should have talked them out of it. All things considered, they came out far luckier than anyone could have expected. ]

[ She believes the majority were under the impression? What a load of crock. Veronica's communicating with Anna through a wrist-comm after having been kidnapped to a Prisoner-like island, and even she thinks that what Anna says is a crock.]

Was it, though?

[ Her responses are taking longer, they're getting harder to force out. To her the answer is obvious. So much more could potentially have been lost than her secret to a few kids. They could have paid a far higher price for this escape attempt. They got out lucky, and Anna is very aware of that. ]

No. Not at all.

And you're just... going to roll with it?

No.

[ That at least comes with conviction, without hesitation. She hadn't been in the right frame of mind to weigh up the risks when she'd responded to Sharon's call to arms, and had it not been for Balthazar's disappearance she probably wouldn't have joined them at all.

In hindsight though, she's really glad she did. ]

No one's making that mistake again, not if I can help it.

[Veronica, wasting time with a question, beating around the bush? Nope. Not really.]

[ Yeah, notice how it's most and not all. Sometimes Anna's more honest than she realises. ]

Yeah, but does she have to be so stupid about it?

Come on, angel in the machine. How many things would you have done differently?

[ She's pushing buttons that probably should be pushed, in all honesty, but Anna doesn't know how to handle that. That's why Veronica just gets to deal with a sudden, angry outburst instead. ]

Everything! None of us were in our right mind, people went missing, we all got worked up into this...this frenzy. No one knew what they were doing, what we would be up against. Why didn't anyone who went for Bruce think to tell us what was on the other side of those woods? People almost died. It's not happening again.

Glad to hear it. [Her tone is wry, with a thread of cruelty that dances just beneath the surface and refuses to rise.]

It shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place.

[And with that, she cuts the feed, because she thinks she's proven her point and she has to seethe quietly for a couple minutes.]
