[There's a face peering at the device, frowning. Nose wrinkled, frustration in her eyes and a quickness to her tone. A hint of a short temper and a slight sense of worry. An urgency found only in the voice of people used to being on the run. She fights to keep her expression neutral, aiming for boredom. It comes off as impatience and annoyance.
She's outside, blue sky behind her and the sound of water nearby. The hum of a breeze just in the background.]
I want answers. I don't know where I am or how I got here. Last thing I remember, I was on a bus to Alaska.
[No, she wasn't. She was on her way to New Mexico but who knew if the Shop was listening or not. Better to be dishonest and safe than honest and dead.]
What happened? Who brought me here and why? The sooner I find out, the better. [A pause as she looks around, trying to gain some information as she does so. A sign of where she is or a way out.]
I really, really can't be here. It's important that I continue my trip.
[And there's fumbling with the device before it stops recording.]

[ Look, she's not snooping or anything, it's just that there isn't much to do other than listen to the conversations over the network. But she heard something - she's sure she heard her say 'Shop' and it might be nothing, but she's asking anyway. ]
Did you say 'The Shop'?
Seriously, I'm not kidding. Did you or didn't you? It's- it's important.
Who're you?
[ She doesn't even think to lie. Honestly the though just doesn't occur to her. The Shop isn't her nightmare, it's her dads. She's just inherited the knowledge, nothing more, but she'd always thought he was mad.
Now? Well, now she's not so sure. ]
Do you know anything about them? Are they real? I thought- I mean, I just didn't believe him.
[ And, yeah, that's a lot of guilt in her voice. ]
[This is certainly different. Charlie scratched her head a moment, eyeing Laura with a look of uncertainty. This could be a trick of some kind but there was a tiny part of Charlie that had her doubts.
This didn't come off as a trick. Then again, neither had Rainbirds friendliness.]
I know a bit about them.
[Though, from the look on her face, she probably means she knows a lot about them and none of it's good.]
Can I meet you somewhere to talk to you? I don't feel like chatting on this...stupid thing on my wrist.
Yeah, yeah that's- would you? I'd appreciate it, God. You have no idea. Uh, do you know where the fountain is? I've not been here long- not long at all, actually, I just. Do you know where it is? I could meet you there.
[Jesus, yeah. Totally sledgehammer to the stomach big. What was going on?
Charlie's device now shows a sideways view of her surroundings and they're moving. She's clearly walking towards the fountain. She hopes.]
[ video => action]
[ She pauses for a moment, then quickly shakes her head and cuts the feed. Maybe this isn't the brightest idea in the world, after all this 'Bobbi' could be just about anyone, but she's not exactly thinking straight just now.
So Laura doesn't think about it too hard, just grabs the rifle sitting at her door and rushes off to the fountain. She's close enough that it doesn't take long to get there, and when she does she sits on the stone rim while she waits. There still isn't a bullet in the damn gun, it's all but pointless to bring it with her, but the visual is supposed to do the job for her.
The threat doesn't do much when it's sitting forgotten in her lap though, and Laura's clearly nervous as she waits for the other girl. Something here has had her far more on edge than normal, even for someone that has just woken up in a strange town, but she hasn't figured out what yet. And likely she won't, what with far more important issues coming up - namely the namedrop of the crazy crackpot theory her Dad had been rambling about in his last days. ]
[action]
She spots Laura a bit later and immediately stops in her tracks when she spots the shotgun. Shit. On. Toast. She hated guns and sort of cringed away from it, nose wrinkling before she looks at the other girl.]
Seriously? How bad does it get here? Does everyone get one of those? Because I'll pass.
no subject
No, uh. That's from back home. Useless piece of crap, but y'know. [ She nudges it with her foot to make a point, letting the gun fall to the floor with a shrug, then turns back to look at Charlie again, eyeing her closely. ]
So. Who are you, then?
no subject
[Seriously. She's wearing a t-shirt, jeans and boots. She doesn't look much bothered by the cold, though. It's seriously No Big Deal to her.]
Bobbi.
[Sticking with that for now.] How do you know about the Shop?
[She refrains from asking 'what did they do?', hoping she won't have to ask at all.]
no subject
I don't. I don't know anything about them at all. [ Pause pause pause. ] My dad, he uh. He was scared of them. Wouldn't stop going on about how they were 'coming'.
[ And she'll just trail off there, rather than even begin to touch why he hasn't elaborated himself. Too soon, too much, and on top of everything else she's here in unknown territory. Laura isn't used to survival, but she does know not to reveal her weaknesses. ]
no subject
Sounds like my dad.
[And her dad had been right. The Shop was coming. They were always coming and Charlie knew they always would be.
And that's a very smart move, Laura. Charlie'd be impressed if she knew.]
They don't usually show interest in people unless that person has something they want.
no subject
What sort of people are they interested in, then? 'Cause honestly, he didn't have anything interesting.
[ If only some small shred of information about all of this had been passed onto her, if only she'd actually believed any of the insane ramblings of those final days. But if only's don't help her now, and now she has to do all the leg work herself. ]
no subject
[It wasn't common 'knowledge' that the USDSI liked poking at things of a supernaturally scientific nature. It was more 'conspiracy theory'. And it was more honest than the Shop saying they made painkillers and other medical blah-blah bullshit.]
I mean, I'll answer your question. But I want to hear your answer first.
no subject
[ She's got nothing to gain by lying now. All it would do would put more road blocks between her and the truth, and she's sick to death of that. ]
All I know is we were running, and my dad was terrified. And then the world went to crap, and I got stuck with nothing but guesswork left. Who are they and what do they want?
no subject
Sorry for asking that twice. I just wanted to make sure. Now, what I'm about to say might sound insane, but I can guarantee it's true.
[Charlie remains standing, arms crossed over her chest as she looks at Lauren. This isn't that easy to talk about, because she will eventually divulge a lot about her and she'd rather not. But if it's necessary, it's necessary.]
They're government scientists, for starters. Which usually implies that they're smart and they're really not. They like to poke around in things considered paranormal. Immortality. Other possible dimensions. Psychic abilities. Shit no one should be poking with because it'd take us far too long to understand.
[She'll let that sink in some.]
