Memory 1 || Audio || Day 71

[The audio recording begins with a cough. It’s lucky Mordion hasn’t turned the video component on, because the device on his wrist is being treated with a very close investigation, and he’d rather not subject anyone to that thank you. He’s not convinced this isn’t still The Bannus, but why it’s changing the scenario now is beyond him. Better to be safe.]

Good day. I am searching for a small number of people and would appreciate any assistance finding them again.

A petite young women. Darkish skin, curly hair. Last seen in a blue gown with headdress.

A teenage boy, on the tall side, wearing leather armour and perhaps carrying a sword.

An old-model Yamaha robot, series nine. Silver, but with extensive repair. I tried my best to maintain his integrity as an antique model, but I was working with limited supplies. Answers to the name ‘Yam’.

Vierann, Hume, Yam, if any of you are listening I do appreciate not being kept in the dark.

[ This isn't a voice Ned recognizes. That fact, plus his inquiries about a bunch of people who sound unfamiliar, all point to one answer: he's new here, and asking after friends, family, people left behind. It's always a painful thing, speaking to people who have just arrived. A reminder of his own captivity. But someone has to do it ]

I'll keep an eye out, but chances are they aren't here. Do you, um. Know where here is, yet?

[He switches to video recording himself as soon as Ned's face appears on the communication device. It only seems polite, after all. Say hello to a rather gaunt and serious look face, he'll try to hold the camera far enough away to avoid startling him.]

Some kind of seaport town, low population. I was last on Earth but the technology level present here doesn't seem consistent with that location.

[ Ned might be a jumpy guy, but he isn't going to be startled by just someone's face, even if it is a rather intense and unusual one. ] That's pretty much it. None of us know if this is actually Earth at all, or an alternate dimension, or a knock-off. Something about the stars being wrong.

[ From the sound of the way this guy said 'I was last on Earth', there were other options available. Which makes Ned think he's from the future, like River or Daneel]

What year is it supposed to be, for you?

I believe the Earth year was 1993. Are you saying that non of the current residents are native to this area?

[More exiles from Homeworld? He doesn't recognise the man on the screen before him, but he's not familiar with everyone in The House of Balance.]

[ Ned nods. ] We don't know what happened to the people who lived here before, but everyone who is here now was abducted and brought here, like you were. From different times and planets and versions of reality. [ He gives Mordion a small smile that is more resignation than amusement or happiness ]

I'm Ned, by the way.

Mordion Agenos. Version of reality? Now there is something even I haven't come across yet.

[He's still looking around as he speaks, always needing to remain on top of his environment.]

Are you aware of the number of devices recording in each vicinity? There's a rather startling number of them, actually.

[ Well that's certainly an unusual name. Ned thinks that 'even I' is perhaps an indication that Mordion has come across things like time travel and space travel. Interesting. Perhaps that's why he's coping so well with the whole situation. At this point, when he'd arrived, Ned had been close to a panic attack. ] It was a new concept to me, too. From the sound of it we might be from different universes, though. I hope it's not rude for me to say, but you don't seem very... 1993.

[ He can see Mordion noticing the cameras, lets out a rather bitter laugh when Mordion asks if he's noticed them ] They're a bit hard to miss. Wave hello to the men behind the curtain. [ Okay, sarcasm and Wizard of Oz allusions aren't actually going to help the guy. Ned sighs, voice becoming more gentle as he explains. ] This whole town is some kind of... experiment, we think. We're all trapped here, and those cameras are how they watch us. They, of course, being the people who brought you here. None of us know who they are or what they want or how they did it.

Not rude at all. Unless '1993' is something desirable to be compared to. I can't say I'm familiar enough to know for certain.

[He smiles, briefly but genuinely. It's s smile full of good humour and warmth and transforms his face from the gaunt and skeletal of before to something far more human looking and friendly. But he settles again as he tries to work out what exactly is going on.]

If I said the word 'Bannus', would that mean anything to you?

I wouldn't think so. [ It's funnier if you lived through the 90s in Ned's version of reality, probably. ]

[ Ned's head falls to one side in a curious tilt, eyes narrowing a little unconsciously as he racks his brain for any associations. A town? A person? A planet? A company? In the end he gives up, shrugs ] Not a thing.

There is only one robot current in residence, or currently under observation.

Take your choice it's all semantics.

Welcome to a place that has a name that might not be real. Welcome to a place that bends the rules of time. You might escape just to find yourself here tomorrow, several years older and none the wiser.

No, uh, sorry. I haven't seen any of them.

But, uh... I'm not sure you are where you think you are.

[ Wherever that may be. ]

Haven't seen 'em around. Especially not the robot.

[A young woman blinks at the comm around her wrist, at the description of the individuals, while a black cat lies, ears flicking, in her lap. She has an accent that most would describe as British, though it's different where she comes from.]

I haven't seen them around. But people don't often arrive in groups.

[Fortescue pauses, then adds,] Assuming you've just woken up in a strange place you've never been before.

[It's odd that this is normal, now, she has to reflect.]

Is there anyone in this place who considers themselves in charge?

Given the number of recording devices, 'under observation' seems appropriate.

[Sounds like The Bannus field all right.]

Thank you for the welcome, you've been one of the more friendly since my arrival.

[He blinks innocently at the camera.]

Oh? And where do I think I am?

That does seem to be getting the most attention. Most people here must be a from a place where they're a little less common.

[He's smart enough not to mention waking up in strange places isn't exactly an unusual occurrence for him.]

Yes I've been informed I might be on my own here.

It's not pleasant. But they seem to like individuals. Even if they come in the same day, it always seems to be alone.

Are you all right?

[There have been so many injured arrivals, she feels justified in asking. She was, too.]

[He blinks at that, and then looks down as if to check if he might have blood on him or something else which might be startling people.]

I believe I'm fine, thank you. Are you alright?

I don't think so. Maybe. We're not a terribly organized bunch, I'm afraid. There is... one guy. You can ask around. [ So unhelpful, Ned. In compensation, he offers some unasked-for information ] The ones who are really in charge are the ones who brought us here, obviously. Be nice if that weren't true, but... [ He trails off into a shrug ]

The great mysterious kidnappers in the sky? Good of them to stay out of the way. Intelligent, at least.

[He casts his mind out, again, feeling just around the outlines of the people in this place. He range isn't large, but neither is this place. All the same, he's hit with an usually strong range of feelings and emotions and experiences, and he closes his mind from it almost immediately, staggering a little.]

[Fortescue quirks a smile at him. It's a little endearing, that movement.]

As I can be, here, love. Have you been given the run-down of this place?

[As far as he can tell there are worse places to be in.]

Small seaport time, potentially between dimensions with no visible means of escape at the moment. People have been collected from multiple locations in time and space and can appear and disappear without notice. We are also under constant observation and may be used to conduct experiements. Is there anything else?

I'm afraid I haven't seen any of the individuals you speak of.

[Curiosity is one thing, but politeness comes first.]

Personal experience with robots is unusual in this place. While I'm not familiar with the Yamaha model in particular, I am curious as to what sort of expertise you have with robotics.
