Martha's 8th - Video - Day 116 - Open/Private

[Martha looks oddly happy for her. Not as happy as she should, but she's not moping.]

Right. How would everyone feel about a variety show. I'm a storyteller, I know someone who plays music. Anyone else have a talent they would be willing to share?

If there are people willing to do this, is there any chance you'd allow us space in your pub?

I'm afraid that all I have to offer are a handful of card tricks, and they're not all that exciting. But I'd love to watch.

Oh card tricks are fine. It's just an inmate run talent show Meja.

[She laughs quietly.]

I see. In that case, I don't mind contributing. But no complaining about how boring they are. How have you been?

I’m sure they’ll be just fine Meja.

Me? I’m all right. Things have been quiet since the earthquake thank goodness. What about you?

Oh, keeping busy. Experimenting with a few tricks from home. I'm glad to hear things have been quiet for you.

[Martha being a doctor and all.]

Tricks from home? [She is curious. She doesn't know much about Meja other than the woman has something to do with Norse Mythology.]

Magic, mostly. [She knows there are people here who don't have magic in their worlds, and for them magic is rather strange, but it's the honest answer. So she gives it.] I've been experimenting with the garden to see if I can't help it along even more.

Magic? Well, that's a new. Is it really magic?

As opposed to card tricks? [Meja smiles, and nods.] Yes, it's real. On the ancient and touchy side, perhaps, but it's real all the same.

... Ancient and touchy? What sort of magic do you do? Is that even the right question to ask?

[She chuckles.]

It's temperamental, if you don't know what you're doing. The runes require exactness. It took me a long time to learn the basics.

[And Meja knows enough not to cause explosions on accident, but she's nowhere near as sophisticated with it as her mentor. It's not even her fault, really. Humans aren't known for magic, in a broad sense.]

Huh. We don't have magic in my world. Just really advanced science. Can anyone learn magic? Or are only specific people able to do it?

Humans usually aren't that great with it, for whatever reason. It's a much rarer thing. But with enough practice [and it's a lot, sometimes] anyone can learn to do the very basics.

And what are the very basics?

Basic protections against the elements, favorable weather, boons that you can give an area. There are a few medicinal purposes, as well. [Meja shrugs lightly.] In the old days, village elders used to specialize in such things. You won't find them on Midgard anymore. At least in human settlements.

Do you think... do you think you could maybe teach me?

Teach you magic? [She considers for a moment.] I can't say I'm as good as my mentor, and it would take some time for you to learn. But if you're amenable to investing that time then, of course, I'd be glad to teach you.

I am. I... it all sounds so interesting... and some of it could be really useful.

No doubt about it. We'll need to pull out all the stops to become free of this place, I'm sure. [And if she can indulge in a little homesickness, well, that's all the better.] I can't promise it will be easy, and it can be tiring when you start getting into the magic part. When would you like to start?

Oh believe me, I'm no stranger to difficulty.

I could start anytime.

[Meja grins.]

All right. Let's hope our forecast stays open, then, in terms of disasters, and get together soon.
