004 | Chuck Shurley | Day 124

[ Chuck, like most people, has a healthy dose of curiosity. At least, he did before he arrived at the Science Center. After all, he's fairly certain that wandering aimlessly around abandoned, destroyed scientific centers was the thing that got most people killed in the beginning of horror movies.

Or, more frightening, his own books.

And so, until now, Chuck has had no incentive to get out of his own, labeled and personalized, room to what could be his potential death. But there's only so long he can be properly frightened and, he's found rather quickly in this place, ignorance is not bliss. It's actually quite dangerous.

And so, he'd gone exploring and finds himself in the infirmary. Now, he's not a doctor or anything, but he's pretty certain not all the tools present there were necessary for healing people. Not to mentioned the unmarked "medicines". ]

So, uh. I think this might be where we were taken? You know, when people would disappear for weeks at a time.

[ Although, the ones who had disappeared recently were nowhere to be found. He's not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. ]

Find anything interesting?

[Fortescue isn't all that far, exploring down a corridor with Jazz right on her heels, but pulls out her phone to see Chuck's message. She doesn't like the fact that they can't find any of their missing persons here, either, naturally.]

Uh. That depends on what you mean by 'interesting'?

[ Because there were a lot of things in the infirmary. Things that would make complete sense being there and things he's not sure he wants to think too hard about. ]

Things we can use?

[She knows that one of the doctors have been in there. But maybe they'd missed something.]

Or clues. Those would be good, too. This place seems short on them, aside from the obvious.

Well, I mean. There's medicine. And, you know, syringes and stuff.

[ He picks up something that looks like a... you know what, not's not sure exactly. He quickly puts it back down. ]

But, uh. There's a lot of unlabeled things?

That doesn't seem very scientific of whoever was here.

[Aren't scientists supposed to be into labeling things? Body parts, medicine? Come on.]

Would you care for some company?

[Dirk is less cautious about wandering around mysterious places. He's been doing so for a while, and now is sitting down in one of the many hallways. When Dirk snaps into view, he's squinting behind Chuck rather than at him.]

What makes you say that?

Uh, because I don't think infirmary beds are supposed to have restraints?

[ He sees Dirk trying to see around him and he turns the phone around so that Dirk can see, yes, there are indeed restrains on the beds. ]

That's the place where our neighbourly mad pervy scientists poked and prodded around with peoples' brains and possibly tortured them?

Any sign of the scientists?

I think this is the place, yeah.

[ He shakes his head. ]

No, none of the scientists. Or people who are currently, you know. Kidnapped.

I guess they must've shut up shop and moved some place else when they found out we were moving it.

Kinda rude.

I was hoping to smack them all in the face.

[ Chuck grins. He'd like to see that, because he's fairly certain he knows who would win, and it would not be the scientists. ]

I'm sure you'd give them all a run for their money.

But, I mean... Where else is there for them to go?

Maybe they're hiding under our beds waiting to pounce...

Oh God... What if they are?

[ Guess who just freaked herself out and will be checking under her bed tonight! ]

I don't think they're under our beds, Donna. I mean, they're scientists, not the boogyman.

[ Although, to be fair, he hasn't checked. He might be doing that when he returns to his room, just in case. ]

Pervy scientists who watched us with their pervy cameras.

[ She'll be checking too. ]

What if now we're here they've taken to perving up close and personal? Have you ever met a boogyman? How do you know they're not one and the same?

No, I've never seen a boogyman before. I'm... I'm pretty sure they're not real?

[ It comes out a question because he's honestly not sure. He' seen a lot of things turn out to be real. The boogyman was entirely plausible. ]

But, uh. I doubt they're watching us from under our beds.

I hope you're right or I'll probably never sleep again!

[ Oh hai, Chuck! It's just your favourite demon of all time.

Meg's sat in her room with her feet propped up on the desk. ]

Reminds me of torture class. Only brighter.

[ Hello indeed, favorite demon of all time!

Except, no, that's not something he wants to hear out of the mouth that had been kissing him. ]

Oh. That's, uh...

[ What's a little torture between kiss buddies? ]

Don't worry. I won't give you a demonstration - unless you're into that kind of thing.

[ He waves his free hand at the screen. ]

No, no, that... that isn't necessary.

Shame we haven't come across any of the scientists. I would've quite liked to give them a taste of their own medicine.

Yeah, well...

[ He's not entirely sure he would stop her at this point. ]

They're gone now.

[ How, where, he's not sure. Over the rainbow, he supposes. ]

[ Here's hoping they choke on the yellow brick road, then. ]

Which begs the question - who or what is going to take their place?

Don't remember. It's all kind of a haze. Every time I get close it slips out of my hands.

[ Alec doesn't remember much about his time with the scientists, but he's pretty sure it sucked all the same. Being back here sucks, but it does remind him of home though. Manticore. Not Seattle. ]

[ Chuck shakes his head. ]

No, I don't remember either.

[ Even being in this room isn't triggering anything. ]

How long did they have you for? [ Everything kind of runs together and he's not even sure how long they had him. They did have him though. For a while. He came back to an empty house, but thankfully Allison and Anita took him in. The fact that Allison is gone still pulls at him. ]

Three weeks, I think?

[ At least, that's what he was told when he returned. He doesn't remember anything. The closest he gets is a furry of different emotions and then suddenly he was standing on the edge of town without remembering how he got there. ]

You?

Why are you poking around in there?

Uh... curiosity?

[ If this was the room the scientists had done their experiments, he would have thought he'd be able too find something to trigger his memories. But so far... nothing. ]

Why do you poke your nose in things that don't involve you?

[ Is he lecturing? OH YES HE'S LECTURING. ]

But it... it kind of does involve me.

[ He's never been on to talk back to an archangel, but this seems important. He was brought here, to this world and to this room to be experimented on. And there had to be a reason for that, right? ]

No, it doesn't. You don't know what the equipment is for and you can't recover memories from it, and until such time that one of us can, it doesn't involve you.

[ He's cranky today. ]

[ Dean meant to come on here with something witty to say, but he finds the first thing that pops into his head isn't funny at all and is actually about Charlie.

So he's frowning instead of smiling into the camera. ]

Makes you wonder where they go now.

With the scientists, right? Wherever they went after leaving this place.

[ At least, that's what he's assuming. But, on the bright side, he hasn't found any dead bodies so, at least, those that had been taken weren't dead or anything.

Which was, you know. A good thing. ]

And where do you think they went? Back up to the mothership?

[ Not that he thinks they're all aliens; they barely understood what the machine is or does or any of that. But he is curious about where they all up and disappeared to, why they're letting them all into this science center. Out of the kindness of their mad science researching hearts? ]

I don't know. There's got to be some place else.

[ He's not sure how or where. But they hadn't known about this place until they were already here, so it's not too much of a stretch to believe that the same thing could happen again, right? ]

[ Makes sense; this place has a final destination feel -- he means in terms of traveling but maybe like the movie franchise too -- but they did all have to go somewhere. ]

Seems like they dropped the surveillance, or they got a lot better at hiding their cameras. Haven't found any here.

[ Chuck looks around him. He hadn't noticed, but now that Dean mentions it... ]

Yeah, you're right. But we have these phones now. I mean, they could...

[ He doesn't want to get all government conspiracy or anything, and assume they're listening through the phones. But, well... ]

[ Great, now Dean's eying his phone suspiciously. ]

You think they're listening in? You think they're watching us through these? [ The feed wobbles as Dean turns the camera around, inspecting it. ]

Guess I'm sleeping with this thing in the closet.

[She doesn't want to ask... but she has to.]

H-have you... have you found anyone?

[ He shakes his head. ]

No, no one. I mean, I looked, but...

...they're probably wherever the scientists relocated to, right?

[ At least, he hopes. ]

Where is it? I... there might be something left.

[A smell, a heartbeat... something.]

Oh, uh, this is part of the infirmary.

[ He can't sense anything, but if she thinks she can, she's more than welcome to try. ]

[She bites her lip and then nods.]

Alright, I'm on my way. I just... want to look around.

That's what I was thinking, too.

[Jo frowns, pressing her lips together.]

It never happened to me, but from the stories people would tell based on what little they could remember, it makes sense.

I did. I was, uh, taken. For something like three weeks, I think?

[ At least, that's what he had been told when he returned. ]

But I don't remember any of... this.

They would have kept you contained somewhere, right?

[She imagines, at least.]

Think if you found that room, it might jog your memory?

I was hoping. [ He really, really was. ] But, I mean, I'm here now and I don't remember anything. I don't remember being here.

[ He's not sure if that means he wasn't here before or if things are just that blurry. He's not sure which is worse. ]

[She presses her lips together. She hadn't realized he'd meant that very room. It didn't bring back any memories at all? That was worrisome.]

Do you think it's possible they took you elsewhere, or...

[She frowns.]

Or maybe they were just that thorough when it came to overriding memories? Or whatever it is they might have done.
