video/action ❆ day 129
[Poking around with Anita, and on her own, has yielded the discovery of a lab with decent skylights. As a result, it's less foreboding than the other labs. But only just. What helps further is a series of neat little raised beds — Meja found them in poor condition, much like the rest of the facility, but she's dedicated her morning to rejuvenating the soil and cleaning things off. There are now little carved runes on the side of the beds that should negate them needing to be watered — most of the time, at least.
And now that they look a little less like brown death, she's investigating in the cupboards. No matter how much that little voice says that maybe she shouldn't. And it isn't without a point: she finds a spider in one of the cupboards that's bigger than her own hand. For now, she'll leave it alone, but if it's poisonous she's not sure what to do with it. Someone else could get hurt.
What she's finding is definitely interesting. Unmarked containers of seeds, for another. The equipment she finds is completely foreign to her, for the most part. There are basic things she can guess about, but the technology is... well, it's beyond her. After gathering a small amount on an empty table that she cleaned earlier, she switches on her phone's video function.
Roland the white rat can be seen grooming himself on top of a raised bed. It seems that he's going to stick with Meja, at least for now, since she's feeding him regularly. He's steering clear of the spider; it looks like they know one another.]
I don't suppose anyone's feeling adventurous? Or knows what these devices are for? It seems some of our scientists were into plants... in their own way.
[For anyone wandering in the area, the door's open. When she isn't pondering the technology or rooting around in a cupboard, she's contemplating her notebook for ways to improve potential plant growth — sitting on the floor with her long legs splayed to the side. (Yet again. Maybe this garden will last longer.) ]

[ No, he's genuinely confused. What does she mean by "their own way," if it isn't an innuendo? ]
video
[Sorry, Dean, that one's a little beyond her. Growing pots?]
I mean they were... growing things indoors. The last time I saw that, there was nuclear fallout to worry about.
[Surely things aren't that bad outside. No, make that hoping things aren't that bad. One nuclear-devastated planet was enough to deal with, thanks very much. They'd had to end the world, in a way, to repair it.]

[ Her explanation is way less fun than his. ]
They've got a lot of weird shit in the kitchen. I'm kind of thinking this stuff pops up in here like we do, you know? Maybe they were experimenting.
no subject
Sorry, not a clue.
[She glances at the little containers of unmarked seeds.]
If it's another experiment, the plants in here should be very interesting.

[ video ]
Looks like they were into growing wacky baccy - or tomatoes.
[ A pause. ] You reckon we can get things growing here like in the old gardens?
[ video ]
We can try. I'm not sure if anyone still has any seeds, but they were growing something here. [She gestures to one of the many little containers.] We'll just have to see what that was.
[ video ]
I really hope it's not something illegal or poisonous. Some flowers would be good - brighten the place up a bit.
[ video ]
The Midgard of now, which is back to what it was supposed to have been, probably has marijuana, but it's not something she'd pursue on her own.]
That wouldn't be hard, would it, to brighten things?
[They have a decent selection of seeds. Time will tell what they actually are.]
I hope you're right. Something living that isn't mold would be nice.

[It sounds a little sinister when you put it that way, which has him curious, if not more uncertain about this whole place. Still, he casts a quick glance at the equipment he can see on the screen and ponders for a moment.]
I don't believe I know what the devices are for, but you might do well to ask Balthazar. He has an interest in plants and gardening, so...he may know.
video;
Indoor gardening, for the most part. But... odd. Some of it I'm familiar with, and some of it I'm not.
[Only some of the beds have dirt.]
What can I say — I sort of prefer plants in actual ground.
video;
[He makes a bit of a face, because clearly it's not a good or even okay sort of odd. But, pessimism aside, he nods.]
Plants in the ground makes far more sense. I don't know what would be beneficial about growing them inside like that. ...Though I suppose it could be beneficial for us now, with no more gardens...
video;
[What can she say? Meja's kind of used to odd things happening to her. It comes with being a Valkyrie, for the most part. But she doesn't like being trapped.]
If these seeds have fruits or vegetables, perhaps we can supplement the strange cafeteria for those who require food.
[That would be nice, anyway. She quirks a wry smile.]
I'm Meja, by the way.

[ He doesn't get the technology. But he catches sight of the beds, and it piques his interest. ]

The door didn't want to open, but I got it there eventually.

[ Watch husks? ]
...we could use another of my brothers.
no subject
That would be wonderful, if you would. I mean, we should all use this space. Anyone who wants to. It feels a little less... sterile than the rest of the building. Especially if we can get things growing.
[Roland squeaks, as if he's agreeing. But really, he just tickled himself.]

[She's no botanist, but some of those plants are pretty interesting.]
Those runes -- are those your doing?
Ja, they are. I was using them in the gardens back in the Cape. They'll work just as well here, in theory.

[From what she's heard of Meja's world and background, she can't help being curious. Most magic puts her on edge and earns her disapproval, but this is different. This place has taught her that not all magic, as well as monsters, were not always the same as what she was used to.]

[ He expects her to understand that him not recognizing plants is significant. ]
I'm unsure of its function or source.

Inside, or outside? It makes sense that the scientists would have flora from other worlds. In a technical sense, we're fauna from other worlds.
[She smiles slightly, to show that it's a joke. But it's true, too.]
no subject
Inside. I found a lab with some strange plant life behind glass. It didn't seem prudent to touch it. There was something... off about it.

So, he's been stir-crazy, and the moment he sees what Meja's up to, he's interested. Rather than bother replying on video, he hastens to find her, sticking his head through the doorway and looking all around.]
I didn't know this was here. Are there plants?
[He's not sure when he became obsessed with gardening.]
action
[She glances up from her notebook, smiling. Roland's chewing on a corner of it.]
I sort of had to... force the door open.
[And even though this is the facility of the people who kidnapped her, Meja still sounds a little sheepish that she damaged their property. Going on destructive rampages is really not a thing that she's known for. Only when her anger gets carried away — and those times can be counted on one hand. As an immortal, at least.]
No plants yet — but I thought we could all change that. There are plenty of seeds of... unknown origin.
action
[He's amused how she sounds apologetic about breaking things, but perhaps old habits die hard, even in another world one didn't ask to be brought to.]
Mystery seeds! Well, that ought to be fun. Show me?
