Ranger's log 002 | Video | Day 152

[At first, there is just noise, the rough pant of breath and rush of floor beneath the camera’s feed, but soon enough the ground stops running by so fast, and there’s the little click of claws upon the floor, and a shot of paws. A sharp, ”Max! Drop it!” rises in the background, and with a loud whine, the comm clatters to the floor, covered in drool. There’s a shot of the wrinkled face of a bulldog snuffling at the downed technology, before his owner scoops it up and wipes it off, feed shifting quickly.

It’s only when Chuck holds the comm up to check for damage that he notices the blinking red light, and scowls at the comm before turning towards the dog.]

Dammit Max. [There’s a puppyish whine, and Chuck shifts as if someone leaned their weight against him, before he turns back towards the camera.] Right, I realize kidnappin’ humans is old hat by now, but dogs? Is that common?

[He shakes his head, going to shut off the feed, before pausing and panning over to show where Max is flopped at his feet, tongue lolling out of his mouth comically. And then the feed ends, cut short. Chuck feels no need to expand upon that.]

They kidnapped your dog? Well, it's rarer than kidnapping people [ She doesn't say 'humans' because really, some of her best friends in this place are incredibly not human. ]

... but kidnapping pets isn't entirely unheard of.

He's a cutie!

Same reason they bring the rest of here, I guess. Not entirely sure what that reason is yet, but as soon as I find out what that is!

Welcome to Cape Kore. A place lacking answers.

I'd say it depends on the dog. [ Why kidnap a dog that isn't interesting? ]

Well! You'd want a dog that is going to be beneficial to the kidnappee. Or, a dog that might not be able to blow your secrets. Dogs are very smart, even if they don't seem like it. Good noses! So, you wouldn't want to kidnap a boring dog or a useless dog--unless you don't want the dog to blow your secrets. Unless actually there's no point in bringing the dog and you just wished really hard to bring him or her here. Did you see a shooting star?

[ Nothing against the dog. At all. EVER. ]

"Havin' me on"--what--no! It is completely possible. There are loads of aliens out there that fill the needs of someone in the universe. One race is called Tenza. They fill that need in your life that you need. So, perhaps whoever runs this place is sort of like a Tenza. Except not really a Tenza because they'd assimilate into your life, not bring you into theirs.

Either way! You've got your dog. Yes? Good. Brilliant. Everyone loves a dog.

[ You'll get used to it. Promise! ]

Of course it does! What, have you never seen an alien? Before now obviously. I'm an alien. Two hearts and everything.

[ There's a gasp over the connection, and then Mako's face just...lights up.

She loves your dog, Hansen. ]

...Max!

[ She's already come to see Chuck, but this warrants another visit. ] ...Can I come to see him?

I think your Max, there, might be the first. Dog, that is.

[There's a purring cat in Fortescue's lap, and he doesn't seem to care that the video feed is going.]

Jazz and I were a package deal, I suppose.

[Without Jazz, she'd arrive without a soul. Less fun for whoever's pulling the strings. Or more, perhaps, depending on your definition.]

Animals? None others that were brought in. As far as I know.

[Fortescue considers.]

There's a pretty lady with a rat, but she befriended it from one of the labs. It was here to begin with.

That is a dog? [The amazement in Garrett's voice isn't faked. There's no such thing as a purebred dog back home. He's used to the scruffy, wolf-like mutts that hang around the camp.] Look like a pig with fur!

Lose your ears, feller? Said your dog looks like something I would eat. [He wonders how long he can keep Chuck going for this long before the man just spontaneously combusts. His guess is five minutes.]
