[Daneel is very calm. His voice is even and neutral, his face expressionless.]

I'm aware that a number of individuals here are not human, as they may have been claiming to be. This concerns me on several levels. The First Law demands that I protect human beings from harm, and this I must do, but those of you who are neither human nor robot are a concern to me. I can't anticipate your actions. I'm forced to see you as a threat to those who are actually human.

[He pauses; some of the thoughts that have been running through his head lately are troubling, and he seems to wobble, almost imperceptibely. Some of this is hard.]

Furthermore, I'm aware that I present a significant obstacle to your intentions. The logical course of action for you to take is to eliminate myself. I'm certain you're planning to take action to deactivate or disassemble me. This, I cannot allow.

If I am deactivated, I can't protect the humans who are here. Furthermore, if I am disassembled, every individual here will be killed. I have yet to identify all individuals who are a threat, but if I suspect any violent intentions towards me, I will have no choice but to respond with lethal force to protect myself. I ask you to rethink your plans before it comes to that.

[Daneel looks at Kobra silently for a moment, feeling a little helpless.]

I don't plan on fighting anyone unless I must, Kobra, but I would prefer to keep you safely out of it.

[ Yeah, yeah. Kobra gets the fuckin' laws, but he also gets that you don't punk out on friends. ]

The well-being of the community is far more important than you or I. Any attempts to dismantle me will result in the death of everyone here, whether or not the parties involved are aware of that fact.

[This is hard at the best of times, and right now it seems even harder. He wobbles a little.]

[ He grabs Daneel's arm, supporting him over to the couch. ]

No one's dismantling you. I'll kill them myself. You said it's for the greater good, so that's okay, right?

[He stresses this, but he sits down on the couch, and that's far easier than trying to stand or walk. Walking is a surprisingly complicated maneuver.]

I was informed, upon my arrival, that any attempt to dismantle me or remove a part from me would result in every individual here being killed. It is... disconcerting to know that. Those who plot may know this already.

Well, I'll stop them and even if you're my motivation, you can't deny that it's for the greater good, too.

[ He sits down next to Daneel. ] So just relax.

[Relaxing implies being tense or stressed, which he isn't and can't be.]

I am not comfortable with my safety being tied to the well-being of so many human beings, Kobra. Moreso when there are agencies aiming to remove me entirely.

We'll remove those agencies first! Preemptive strike! [ It's totally ethical when it's for the greater good. ]

Who are they?

I'm not positive of their identities. I overheard part of a conversation over the network. I know that they are not human, but very little else.

We'll find them, Dan. We'll find them and take 'em down. You're safe.

[He shakes his head. His own safety is irrelevant except so far as it pertains to other people.]

If something does happen to me, Kobra, you must make sure no one attempts to disassemble my body after the fact.

I will. Don't worry.

[ For Kobra, it's sentimental, but whatever. No one's touching a fallen friend's body. Fuck them. ]

Thank you. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't hesitate to allow people whatever use of my components they might need.

[ If he sounds petulant, it's only because he feels petulant. ]

[Daneel shakes his head.]

Kobra, if I were to cease functioning, it would be much easier for me to accept if I knew it would help others.

I think that's an accurate analogy, yes. If it would help the survivors, I would want them to.

[ Kobra groans. ]
