Has anyone seen Sam or Dean Winchester in the past few days?

[ He's actually concerned that Dean hadn't really come back at all. What if he'd been hallucinating? ]

Are--[ He's not sure of the best way to word this next question. ] Are Lucifer or Meg or Crowley really here?

[ How much of that had been in his own mind? How much had that drug affected him? ]

Personally I was thinking champagne and ice cream cake, maybe a crossword if I get bored enough. As for your plans for the evening, I couldn't say, but I'd suggest something similar.

Gabriel, I know you're not the Winchesters' biggest fan, but you have to at least care about Balthazar.

[Sigh.]

Of course I do. What d'you propose? We've tried interrogating the hostage - no luck there - and given the huge success that was our last attempt to break out, I'm thinking there's not much we can do in the way of force. Call me defeatist if you like, but caring about him's not gonna do shit as far as getting him back goes, not without a plan, and I'm pretty strapped for ideas right now.

I can't just sit by while my friends are missing.

[ He needs something to focus on or work towards. He can't just carry on as if nothing is wrong when it is. ]

Maybe not, but it doesn't look like you can do much to help them either. Don't get me wrong, if some way to find them turns up I'm all for it - but as it is I'm drawing a blank.

[ Gabriel is right, of course, and the fact that he would offer help means a lot to Castiel. He would have asked, but he also would have expected a refusal. ]

[ He's getting used to the idea that he'll be defending that fact a lot. ]

Your mind's always fractured. Did I mention she's a demon? Did you not notice? Or is that just another hurdle you've somehow thrown yourself over headfirst?

I'm aware that she's a demon. She's the exception to the rule, Gabriel. I trust her more than most of our family.

Not quite. I've still got mine. She has used mine, though.

[ It's not a euphemism. ]

Good for you. I don't. It'll work on you and Anna at the very least, and personally I don't like the idea of her trying it out on me either, whether it can kill me or not. Can't you just give her jewellery like a normal guy?

[ He gives Gabriel a confused look. Why would he give Meg jewelry? ]

She won't try to use it on you.

No, because she's got two brain cells to rub together and I can kill with her mind. You sure she won't try to use it on you?

I'm sure. She's had ample opportunity to in the past. I've been defenseless around her more than once.

[He bangs his head against the wall a few times, for effect, then looks back and shakes it. That's to clear it rather than particularly out of disapproval - turns out hitting your head repeatedly, angel or not, isn't a great idea.]

Ugh. Have you ever considered seeing a shrink about your death wish?

[ Castiel frowns, almost wincing as Gabriel's statement hits a little too close to home. ]

Whether or not I have a death wish isn't any of your concern.

It is if it involves some femme fatale demon running around with your sword. Just because she hasn't killed you doesn't mean she won't, and it doesn't mean she won't go after the humans or Anna or Balthazar.

[Because obviously Balthazar has just gone for a nice long walk. Hush.]

We're in close enough quarters here that something like this'll have consequences for the rest of us. You're welcome to throw yourself under any bus you can find or slit your wrists or go all Girl Interrupted on us if you want, but if Meg decides being a goodie's boring then it's not only going to be your problem to deal with - it'll be everyone's.

She doesn't have my sword. I have it.

[ He sighs. He's not sure what he'd really expected. ]

I don't know what you want from me, Gabriel. I never said she was good. I said I trust her. She's not going to go after any of you because she has no reason to. I'd be a lot more concerned with Lucifer than Meg if I were you. At least Meg has a sense of self-preservation influencing her decisions.

Yeah, I don't really want that to be her only reason. What happens when she does think up a reason, hm?

[In all honesty, it's a relief that Castiel's Meg's mysterious friend. It at least means that she probably didn't get the sword from an angel she'd killed or one who'd decided fratricide would be a fun hobby. Besides, he'd quite liked her before the angel connection had come up. He's just protective, really - mostly of his own hide, but hey, Castiel gets a passing thought at least.]

And Lucifer won't hurt anyone unprovoked. Not us, not anyone else. He isn't a threat, not right now.

He killed you. He's killed both of us and he has reason to want both of us dead.

[ Castiel isn't even remotely convinced that Lucifer intends to play nice for long. He just hopes that when Lucifer does snap, he'll come after Castiel and not the others. ]

I'll keep an eye on Meg's behavior, but she's had ample opportunity to switch sides. I don't think she'll turn on me easily. She's likely more reliable than I am.

If he hadn't killed me, I'd have killed him. Pretty sure that counts as provocation. Can't say I know the details of you kicking it, but seeing as it's you we're talking about, I'm willing to bet you pissed him off pretty bad too.

[He sighs, drumming his fingers on his arm.]

Look, I'm not saying I completely trust him, but I'd know if he was about to flip. I'd like to think I still know him well enough for that, at least. This Meg girl? She could go off at any moment, for all I know. Forgive me if I'm a little concerned about that prospect. But for the sake of preventing yet another family feud - fine. I'm sure as fuck not gonna trust her, but I won't interfere 'less she gets violent, same as Lucy. I'd appreciate you doing the same.

As long as Lucifer doesn't hurt anyone I care about, I won't go after him, and I will keep an eye on Meg for you.

[ He's relieved that Gabriel backed down. There are a lot of siblings that he would easily chose Meg over, but Gabriel isn't one of them. He can't forget what Gabriel has done for them. ]

Good. With a bit of luck we might even be able to avoid mass slaughter and destruction.
