The air tastes strange. [ River knows the video is on but she's not looking at it, allowing instead for the broadcast to show the hallway of house seventeen in the waning afternoon light.

An arm reaches out and a door swings open to a bedroom. Bed rumpled and several books scattered around but otherwise empty.

They took him and she doesn't know when. They took a note, the whole song is wrong now.

[ River sounds exhausted. ]

The air tastes strange. All the notes should be careful and keep themselves in tune.

A hug I can provide, love. [ Victorian stoicism not withstanding. ] Disharmony I can do little about.

[ It's a good thing that Oliver agreed because in a few minutes there's a quiet rapping at the window of his attic.

The moment he opens it he's getting an armful of crying teenager, so. That's something. ]

[ The sound coming from the window is a bit startling but he lets her in without hesitation and there is only the barest pause before his arms wrap tight around her. It's been quite some time since he's tried to be of any particular comfort to anyone and he was a teenager himself the last time it was someone so young.

He speaks softly and, after a moment, presses a kiss to the top of her head. ] All right then, love.

Isn't. [ Comes the muffled answer, but the crying has drifted off a bit to a round of sullen hiccuping before River pulls away. ] Won't. All off balance now, teeter totter on.

Well, no. I suppose it'll never be quite all right again. Not here.

[ There is no question to it, no beating around the bush there. Why bother? Instead, he reaches his still-bandaged hand up to brush at the wet tracks on her cheek with the pad of his thumb. ]

I've dismantled enough clocks to know one bit missing is all it takes.

Now it's wound too tight, too lose. The clockwork girl will stop working if she's not careful.

What then? What then. [ Frowning at his hand. ] There's a clinic, you know.

[ A twitch of a smile. ] Ah, we'll get her back in balance before then. Not to worry.

[ Then a pause to look at his hand, turning it over with a mild shrug. ] There are others in more need of attention than I.

Hard not to worry. Hard to breathe in it? Hard to ignore it. The warning and the siren and the edge of nothing that swallows to a silent maw.

[ River makes a face. ] And they got it. So where's yours?

I think he's the strong, silent type.

[says Erik who's like ....in the doorway, because he hasn't appeared like a creeper to people in a while. Hello Oliver, River. He came about a panicking girl and a disappeared dude, but apparently now there's bleeding! All his favorite things. (No.)]

[ Yes. Let's all just start showing up at Oliver's house. Knocking at windows, silently appearing in his doorway- Actually, the habit of silently appearing is one he's used to handling, though it never gets any less unsettling. ]

I am fine. Honestly. [ Fine and just tucking that hand in when his arms cross over his chest. ] Besides which, my failure to heal properly is hardly the most pressing of issues.

It's pressing, [ says the girl frowning in bare feet at you Oliver. ] there's no extra blood cells to be had in you.

Darwin's gone. [ this is directed at Erik, who in order to properly face River spins on the balls of her feet. ] Couldn't keep track, didn't hear the scuffle, just there and then gone. Can't reach him. Can't find him. He's gone.

[ River really doesn't like the fact that she starts crying again. ]
