Third Drink | Video | Day 97

[Ellen doesn't look real happy. She's not, but normally she's a bit better at hiding it.]

New batch is out of the still but it's weaker than the last one. If anyone wants a bottle, stop by and pick it up.

[She sips water out of a glass. She's got other things to say.]

We're going to need things to run through the still. Rice, oats, cornmeal, frozen fruit, anything that can be run through the still.

If you find anything in the forest, dandelions can be used to make wine, too.

[She almost turns it off, but stops for a second.]

Also, got a haunch of venison, if anyone's willin' to trade for it.

Oh, I see. I'll keep my eye out for them, then. [Fortescue takes the symbols in curiously. Some of them look very similar to nautex symbols.] What do they do?

[Ellen steps back in the bar.]

That big one in front of the door traps demons. There's a few here for safety, protection, repelling a few nasty things I've run across in my life.

[She nods a little, interested.]

And the symbols work because of... magic? Or long association with whatever they guard against?

  [Ellen snorts.]  

The trap is the Key of Solomon, dates back to biblical times. Whether it’s faith or magic, or special blessings, I don’t know. But it works. The rest are from various other cultures.

[That it works is definitely the part that matters.]

I see. I never got far enough into Runic or Seid studies to know if my world has the same sort of symbols.

[She was never really the academic type. Not beyond what was needed.]

[Ellen’s brows pull down.]  

Runic I recognize, but Seid?  

[She’s willing to learn more protection symbols.]

[Fortescue shakes her head slightly.]

It's another school of magic, where I'm from. Magic to do with the mind, and dreams. I'm pretty terrible at it. The most I have is a little training against its effects.

[Ellen frowns.]

So something along the lines of what d’jinn can do. There anyway to ward against it? Not that I minded your help, but I like my dreams to be mine.

I don't think our captors were using Seid. That or they managed to blow past my defenses without the usual headache to tell me something's wrong. [She shrugs. Not much she can do about that.] The training against it is fairly simple, however. Mental exercises, rigorously, on a regular basis.

[justrunsasaloon]

[Ellen sighs. She knows the tricks for keeping the d’jinn out, but not for actually warding a building against them. Which is a pain in the ass.]  

Not much help, then. I’m lookin’ for more physical signs I can put up. I need this to be a safe house, in case things start showing up.

My school days were a while ago, but I'll see if I can dredge anything up in my memory. [Fortescue offers Ellen a wry smile and jokes,] I heartily approve of protecting the liquor supply.

[Ellen chuckles.]  

More protecting my ass. I’m too damned old to be doing the heavy hunting. Don’t mind taking on a demon now and again, but chasing after things? Leave that to the kids.

[blackmagus]

Well, don't worry too much. There's plenty of us to do the chasing.

[justrunsasaloon]

[Ellen snorts. There’s some that seemed to have forgotten just what they’re supposed to chase/]  

I'll man the fort, been doing it for more than twenty years.

[blackmagus]

[Fortescue just smiles slightly, nodding.]

I'll not keep you from it. And I'd better go share my spoils with the boys. Have a good rest of the night.

[Ellen turns back to her work. time to get that blood scrubbed up.]
