Third Drink | Video | Day 97

[Ellen doesn't look real happy. She's not, but normally she's a bit better at hiding it.]

New batch is out of the still but it's weaker than the last one. If anyone wants a bottle, stop by and pick it up.

[She sips water out of a glass. She's got other things to say.]

We're going to need things to run through the still. Rice, oats, cornmeal, frozen fruit, anything that can be run through the still.

If you find anything in the forest, dandelions can be used to make wine, too.

[She almost turns it off, but stops for a second.]

Also, got a haunch of venison, if anyone's willin' to trade for it.

Guy who I’ve seen around. He’s got a guitar. Good enough for me.

[Ellen is being a bit blasé about it, but she’s pretty sure that if he’s anything nasty, he’s not going to get very far.]

Beggars can't be choosers, right? I'd be interested to hear him play.

Figure we can work out a barter. Music for food. Or booze. I'm easygoing.

Food is especially in demand these days, it seems. The supply is getting tight, isn't it?

[Ellen’s look is grim.]

Shorter than I’m comfortable with.

I'll see if I can't trap something for us. Pad our stocks a little.

[It's better than nothing, even if what she ends up catching is pretty meager.]

Not just us I’m worried about. We know how to hunt, to scrounge. Most folks here don’t seem to.

[And are awfully young, in Ellen’s opinion.]

I know. I'm worried about everyone, too. Even with people who know how to hunt, it's not enough to go around.

[Getting the diner back in shape feels almost wasteful when you consider it, really.]

Could we set up a community garden? It's not instantaneous, but it's something.

I'm pretty sure there is one, unfortunately. Just going to take a while before anything's ready out of it. Plus, Balthazar is growing things. We might have to resort to scrounging in the woods which brings another set of problems.

[Like knowing what is and isn't edible.]

At least that's in place for the future. Foraging, though... yeah. That's gonna be tricky.

How long you think we've got until we have to resort to that?

Not sure. We’re already almost out of anything resembling vegetables or fruit. We need both, or someone’s comin’ down with scurvy. Maybe another month at most? Week, tops before we start doing it, just in case.

Stop by the library, see if you can find any herbals or edible plant books. I don’t remember everything.
