[Fortescue is sitting in the gazebo as she fiddles with the wrist comm. Jazz is visible in the background, on one of the rails; he has a beetle pinned under one black paw, apparently for his own amusement.

She's staving off a headache by taking a break in her fishing. Using magic has its problems.]

Our worlds seem to share plenty of differences, but the similarities, I think, are just as interesting. Shared ideas amongst the multiverse. So, if you'd care to indulge me, what are some of your favorite things in popular culture?

Given the recent disappearances, I think it would be a good idea to spring our 'list' plan into action. What do you think?

Seems like a great idea. The disappearances have seemed to be more frequent lately...

A lot of people seemingly vanished overnight.

[And yes, disappearances are pretty common around here, but when they could happen at any time... well, Fortescue starts to feel paranoid.]

Which is very... horror cinema-esque, if you ask me. Anyway, whenever you're free, we should go about and knock on doors and things.

We totally should. Kick doors in if people refuse to talk to us. It's for the good of the whole Cape!

Like we said before — badges. [She smiles.] But really, who could refuse to give two pretty ladies their names?

Well, one pretty lady and her frumpy ginger friend. But yeah! It doesn't even have to be their real name as long as it's a name they'd respond to in roll call!

[He visibly perks up. Pop culture? POP CULTURE?! Finally, his time to shine has come!]

My favourite thing about pop culture is when other people aren't completely oblivious to it. You're... what, the third other person? Congratulations, sweetheart. Yet another virtue to add to your list.

[He'd be more specific, only he loves everything, more or less. Every dumb sitcom, every movie, every silly drama - call it an Ariel-like love of humanity or escapism or whatever you like, but he mostly calls it an absolutely brilliant way to spend his time. Less fun than just desserts maybe, but even the most dedicated serial killer has to take a break once in a while, and watching TV with a bottle of champers and a bowl of ice cream is his one hundred percent favourite way to do it. It had been the same, once, with books and plays and operas, but the sheer variety available through the television are particularly appealing. (Besides, he can't very well go to the theatre in just his underwear).]

Really? [She cocks her head slightly to the side. Sure, she gets plenty of exposure - or had gotten it - through the telenet, but still.] That few? That's depressing. What do people do?

[She's in a war and she still has some time. Of course, she could never be called a workaholic.]

Nonsense. [Fortescue shakes her head a little. You're pretty, Donna. Deal with it.] I'll try and locate some paper. Between the two of us we should come up with something good for keeping a list on.

Popular culture? The galaxy is a large place.

[She shrugs a little, but smiles.]

I admit I have perhaps a guilty appreciation for Blasto films.

[Something she probably wouldn't admit if she thought it at all likely than anyone here would know what sort of ridiculous movie that is.]

[Galaxy? Oooh, hello. Fortescue brightens.]

I suppose each planet would have its own pop culture, if you mean space travel, yes. [She can't even imagine how trends would migrate. Or if they migrate at all.] Why the guilty part?

Because how else would I enjoy a vid about a hanar Spectre "with a lover in every port and a gun in every tentacle"?

[She leans her chin on her hand.]

But sometimes, that is what you are in the mood for.

About 50% brawl, 30% play backgammon or bridge, and the other 20% crochet.

[Beat.]

Or so I imagine. Maybe something else suitably cretinous and/or boring. Anything that'll stop them from understanding all my really clever references.

[His tone's petulant, as if they do it on purpose, just so his ingenious comparisons will go to waste. That's a sign, if anything can ever really show what Gabriel's thinking, that he's just playing up to the joke.]

We can make it into an awesome folder. With photos and doodles. It'll be brilliant! Filing is my speciality!

[Someone's looking far better than they have in weeks. It could just be he's cracked and gone for a full face of makeup, or it could be that he's actually completely healed. He snickers at her question]

If you want to know that badly, I'll sing a few songs in the bath tonight.

Ugh, bridge. [She makes a face.] Give me poker any day. I think you could drop dead playing bridge and not notice.

[Someone may have been forced to play too much of it, while stuck in military bases waiting for conditions to be right. At his references comment, Fortescue smiles again.]

You poor darling. I had no idea the Cape was so unconsciously nefarious.

Excellent, excellent. No one will know what hit them! And perhaps it will give us some insight as far as any patterns to arrivals and departures.

[She chuckles.]

Sometimes cheesy cinema just hits the spot. It's too bad we don't have anything here like that. [Even if there's film, there would be nothing much to play it on.] The cinema back home is full of propaganda at the moment, but I do love a good spectacle.

[Fortescue eyes him dubiously. For both the appearance, and the comment.]

That depends what your songs are about.

[Look, she knows what passes for cleverness with military men.]

And is not the purpose of a good vid to be able to forget about more serious things for a little while? But if we are to entertain ourselves, we must find other means.

[She smirks a little.]

Perhaps more respectable ways.

Not too respectable, I hope. Far enough up there and nothing's fun anymore.

Too true. That all-elcor cast production of Hamlet may have been critically received, but few species other than elcor have patience for a fourteen hour performance.

I would rather see a meaningless action vid, or perhaps -- even better -- a romance.

[Fourteen hours? Good grief. Fortescue tilts her head to the side curiously.]

A meaningless romance, or just a romance in general?

Meaningless if nothing better is available.

[Shiala sighs, but she's smiling.]

Just like in life, I supposed.

[She chuckles softly.] Even meaningless can be nice.

Luckily you're here in the Cape and can avoid all that and fight for your survival instead. [Oh so dryly.]
