[Fortescue is sitting in the gazebo as she fiddles with the wrist comm. Jazz is visible in the background, on one of the rails; he has a beetle pinned under one black paw, apparently for his own amusement.

She's staving off a headache by taking a break in her fishing. Using magic has its problems.]

Our worlds seem to share plenty of differences, but the similarities, I think, are just as interesting. Shared ideas amongst the multiverse. So, if you'd care to indulge me, what are some of your favorite things in popular culture?

Given the recent disappearances, I think it would be a good idea to spring our 'list' plan into action. What do you think?

Really? [She cocks her head slightly to the side. Sure, she gets plenty of exposure - or had gotten it - through the telenet, but still.] That few? That's depressing. What do people do?

[She's in a war and she still has some time. Of course, she could never be called a workaholic.]

About 50% brawl, 30% play backgammon or bridge, and the other 20% crochet.

[Beat.]

Or so I imagine. Maybe something else suitably cretinous and/or boring. Anything that'll stop them from understanding all my really clever references.

[His tone's petulant, as if they do it on purpose, just so his ingenious comparisons will go to waste. That's a sign, if anything can ever really show what Gabriel's thinking, that he's just playing up to the joke.]

Ugh, bridge. [She makes a face.] Give me poker any day. I think you could drop dead playing bridge and not notice.

[Someone may have been forced to play too much of it, while stuck in military bases waiting for conditions to be right. At his references comment, Fortescue smiles again.]

You poor darling. I had no idea the Cape was so unconsciously nefarious.

I think you could drop dead playing bridge and be relieved.

[He smirks, sits back. It's easy to settle into this kind of banter - it's not always easy to find someone willing to just be absurd with him.]

Sometimes I think they drag people here on the sole basis of who can cause me most anguish. People who don't like fiction, people who insist on planting vegetables, people who go around being painfully attractive... the list just goes on and on.

[Being absurd is good, in her eyes, because it blows off the steam of being trapped here when she needs to be home. Talking to people, joking around, flirting - it takes her mind off of that distant sense of panic.]

How terrible. Clearly this list should be found and burnt, Id. What about people who have particularly large noses, or people who enjoy chess?

They're really more mildly discomfiting than seriously upsetting. I'm not totally unreasonable, after all.

Wouldn't want that. Being stuck here would be the most terrible thing imaginable.

Oh, I don't know about that. At least the company's good.

[And at least he's not dead and his family are here and not killing each other and he's actually really truly happy for once and being stuck here indefinitely is pretty much ideal as far as he's concerned

but that's not the kind of thing you say to strangers, is it? Or, if you attended the Supernatural school of Communication and Dealing with Feelings, to anyone.]

And the bar's well-stocked. Could be worse.

[Far too many people attend that school. Fortescue chuckles.]

All points in favor of the place. It would be terrible to be stuck here on one's own, even with a stocked bar. [The Cape would be dead quiet, like a ghost town.] Shame we're deprived of technology, however.

Mm. I do miss TV. And the internet.

[Which he says as if it's the name of his pet. Or a family member. Or even a spouse. He gives a wistful little sigh.]

Still, no good crying over spilt milk. Best to just make the most of what we do have here, am I right?

[You'll only get agreements over here, Gabriel. She practically lived on the telenet back home. Not to have it now has been a strange adjustment, but she's gotten there. Eventually. Though distractions are tougher to find when you can't just click a few buttons for them.]

Right. [She smiles mischievously.] Like you said, the company is good.

Very good, some of it.

[He'll see that smile and raise her a smirk.]

It's just lucky we all get along so well, huh? Really makes the stay a lot more enjoyable.

[She's so glad you get her, Mr. Id.]

Oh, quite so. If there was no one here to banter with, I myself would feel very lonely.

That's quite a bit of practice. Does anyone else measure up?

Not quite. Some of 'em get close, but I always maintain a comfortable lead of a few feet.

Well I suppose being close is all anyone could hope for, then.

Being close to me in any context is an admirable goal, sweetheart. Keep hoping - who knows? Anything's possible.

[That one gets a chuckle.]
