008 | Video | Day 107
[Balthazar appears on the screen with lines of static rippling across his upper chest. He looks in good enough health and spirits, at least, but serious.] Hello, Kore. I'll be quick to the point since the communicators are squirrelly these days.
One: I assume we're all avoiding the ocean inasmuch as possible. Are people still fishing, and if so, where? If not, how is that affecting food stores? Anyone in need?
[The image distorts and gets swallowed up in white noise for a moment, a few words cut off.] ---ouple pounds of purslane and dandelion greens and picked another crop of radishes; I'm happy to make trades. I've also caught something that looks like a rabbit with tusks. It's up for grabs, because the hell if I'm going to skin and gut it myself.
Two: Given the way conditions are deteriorating, I'm wondering if we ought to initiate some sort of buddy system. Pairs, trios, small groups to look out for one another?

[It's bloody, sure, but so are a lot of other things. There's white noise that causes her voice to cut in and out a bit, but the bulk of the message is still there -- audible if you strain.]
Maybe hunting just isn't -- calling? Sounds like you've been doing well with gardening or forag--, though. We need as many -- working on that as we can get.
[She pauses. Hm.]
You know, a buddy system is a good idea.
[He nods slightly.] Those of us with family here are lucky. We won't vanish unnoticed. But there are others here on their own.
[She nods in agreement. He has a good point.]
Yeah, I've met a few of them. One of them actually got taken for awhile -- came back and said he wasn't surprised nobody noticed. As good an indicator as any that we need some kind of system in place. We need to be able to keep tabs on people, keep 'em as safe as we can. All we've got in this place is each other, after all.
[He looks concerned by her next statement, wondering who she's referring to. There are a lot of people without family here, of course, and he doesn't know everyone.]
I wonder--simplest way wouldn't be to just be responsible for--housemates. And some kind of system to report disappearances centrally.
[Idly, she has to wonder if angels really appreciate taste the way people do.]
We could put together a town registry. Accessible to all of the captives here. Maybe have one person from each household report in about their own status and that of their housemates each week? Some people live on their own, though, I think. If they go missing, they don't have other people right there to notice.
--egistry sounds like a good idea, if we can get everyone to participate. Maybe if we put it in--hall or ask Stane about it or something.
[She's not sure how she feels about him yet.]
Guess it can't hurt to ask.
He might. You're prettier; you should ask him.
That's about what Dean said, too, as far as dealing with Stane. I think he expects me to use my feminine wiles. His, apparently, aren't good enough.
I note you haven't said you wouldn't try yet, though. I'll come with, if you prefer.
[She lets out an almost exasperated sigh, but clearly, she's putting effort into it.]
I'll give it a shot. Wouldn't hate the backup, though, if you don't mind.
[That's right. 'We.' You're not wriggling out of this, Balthazar.]
I mean, we want to make a good impression, right? Get him to see things our way? Because mayor or otherwise, I don't imagine there are many people who would want to help people in our position out of the goodness of their hearts. We're subjects, right?
[Who's to say Stane is even on their side?]
I'm not sure what his game is, and I don't know how much I trust him, but I don't get the impression he's power-mad, either. Still, you're right. Making a proper case for this will go better.
[She purses her lips slightly, thoughtful.]
How do we get in touch with him? Does he ever respond to the network or just make announcements?
[Balthazar doubts Stane can hide from an angel.]
((If you'd like to play this out, we could email a mod and see if Stane's available?))
((I would love to, I will tap a mod on the shoulder about this tomorrow!))
((Excellent! Thank you. You can ping me on plurk if need be. <3 ))
