[Jo's voice sounds oddly restrained when it comes out over the network, cautious and uncertain as though she's swallowing something down, holding it back. She doesn't trust herself to use the video function at the moment-- and honestly, considering what she has to say, it doesn't seem appropriate.]

It's been a couple of days since I've been able to get in touch with my mom.

[For anyone else, a couple of days might be negligible, but she and Ellen have been damn near inseparable since Jo's arrival. Even after moving to the research center, they'd lived together, kept close tabs on each other.

Two days without any sign of Ellen was bad news.]

I'm not holding my breath. Pretty sure she's gone.

[And for them, going home doesn't mean much. What was there to go back to?]

I just-- I thought people oughta know. She had a lot of friends here.

She's gone? Sweet Jesus, that's awful. Tragic, even. I'm not sure how the community can survive this loss. Where are we gonna get our booze now?

[He'd considered sympathy, but - evidently - decided against it. As it is, snark seems a better solution. It's his usual solution for most things, anyway.]

[While she wasn't initially planning to go video with any of this, she turns it on specifically to give him a very flat, very pointed look that says nothing short of are you for real right now?]

Glad to hear that's all she was worth to some of us.

Oh, not all. I'm sure she had other virtues... I was a big fan of her trapping and torturing customers technique, for example. That one was a real crowd-pleaser, huh?

[His tone remains affable and pleasant. In a way, that just makes it more offensive.]

[As cheerful as he might be, he definitely just touched a nerve.]

She didn't torture Meg, and Meg is not a customer.

[There's obviously one hell of a grudge there.]

She had every right not to let the thing responsible for our deaths into the bar. Our home.

Oh, honey, you don't have to justify yourself to me. I wasn't criticising.

Felt like criticism.

[But she can admit it. She was on edge to begin with. 'Defensive' isn't much of a leap.]

Feels like my mom and I are the only ones who still think of demons as dangerous.

[Maybe Sam, too-- but she's butthurt.]

I wouldn't go so far as to call them dangerous.

[Unless Castiel's wellbeing is concerned, of course - but that's not a demon-exclusive thing. He feels much the same way about Dean... and morality and justifications and all that aside, he's pretty sure Dean's got Cas into far more trouble than Meg has. Still, he's getting over it - if only because he hasn't much choice but to put up.]

That would probably be received better by someone who wasn't killed by one.

[Not like her death is a big secret around here. It's kind of all she and Dean ever talk about -- when they talk at all.]

Kind of puts a damper on any potential friendships with them.

Probably would.

[He doesn't look or sound as if he cares. It's a touch misleading - he is paying attention, after all, he always is, and it's filed away as a sensitive subject (to avoid or pull out as required) - but for the most part, it's accurate. Hurting people's feelings for no particular reason isn't exactly one of his hobbies, but it doesn't bother him.]

As if the warped personification of evil thing wasn't already gonna put you off? I imagine you've had the 'not all like that' speech before, but I wouldn't put too much stock in that old chestnut. Not that I'd expect you to either - you are a hunter, after all. Not a bunch exactly known for open-mindedness when it comes to the supernatural.

I've heard it a few too many times since I got here, to be perfectly honest with you.

[From people she always thought knew better. People who should know better.]

I'm more open-minded than some, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Gotta take a stand for what you believe in, right?

[It occurs to him briefly that since he's still half-pretending to be just a Trickster, this may not be a good thing to encourage. Stakes may not do him any damage, but they definitely aren't comfortable.

He dismisses the thought, though. Better to be stabbed than miss an opportunity to needle someone.]

It's a slippery slope, after all.

Part of it is about sticking to convictions. Mostly it's about not being okay with certain people suddenly being chummy with the bitch that killed me.

[Oh, she's sour. So sour. Bitter that it's driven the so-called family apart, and she feels like half the time, she's the only one who notices. It was worse before Sam came and told her she had a right to be angry.]

That would be why mom never warmed up to her either, just to get it all out there.

Aw, c'mon, sweetheart - what's a little murder between friends?

You really aren't all that concerned about much, are you?

[Sorry, Gabriel. She just doesn't get you yet.]

It's a problem-free philosophy.
