Julian Bashir | Video | Day 147
[For the first five seconds or so, the camera only shows a wall, with some muffled speech in the background. It's very quiet, and no words can be made out - but the general cadence and tone give the impression of a rather exasperated man talking to (and possibly cursing at) himself. A moment later, however, the view spins around as the camera does, so that instead of the wall it shows a disarmingly sincere face, a little closer up than is entirely customary for a video call.]
Well, er, two things. First off, I've been here a few days now, so I thought it might be about time I introduced myself! My name is Julian Bashir. I'm a doctor...
[he trails off, considering: he's come to the conclusion that this 'society', as an amalgamation of different species and cultures from different worlds and timelines is not really covered by the non-interference aspect of the Prime Directive. But even if the development of a civilisation won't be affected by his interfering, if all these people were to go back to their separate worlds with knowledge of Federation technology, that could be a massive problem. For the moment, he's decided that escape takes priority, and besides their cultures would already be contaminated by each other - so what difference would his input make? But just because he's decided not to actively lie about it, doesn't mean he has to be entirely forthcoming, so at the last moment he reconsiders explaining in any kind of detail.]
Admittedly one accustomed to different, er, methods than I think might be usual here, but I'm a very quick study. So if any of the other medical practitioners here would like a helping hand, or should anyone need assistance of that nature at any point, do feel free to get in touch. As for the other matter, well, I shan't bore you with the details, and I'd hate to get anyone's hopes up unduly, but I've a few ideas as to how we might get out of here. But improvisation only goes so far, you know, as far as tools are concerned. I don't suppose anyone would happen to have a hyperspanner on them...?

[That's enough of a novelty for Garrett to actually reply in an earnest tone rather than being sarcastic or antagonizing Julian.]

[But that might just be the frustration talking.]
I suppose at least you won't miss it here if you never had it.
no subject
Only thing I am missing here is being outside. It is difficult, to be inside all the time.
What's a hydro — [no, wait, that's not right] — hyperspanner? I don't think I've got one, but...

[But now he's beginning to ramble just a tad. Even in the Dominion camp there'd been a chance, but here he can't manage to get anything to work! It's really very frustrating.]
Any kind of complicated electronical device would be a good start. I've been trying to dismantle this for parts, tools, that sort of thing, but no such luck so far, I'm afraid. Of course, if you happen across anything that'd fit the bill, I'd be much obliged if you'd let me know.
[Remiel smiles cheerfully. He's a good listener, and he's been through so many meetings with Barachiel that rambling doesn't throw him for a loop anymore. Human rambling is small-fry, anyway. An archangel can ramble in several different tongues at once, on several frequencies, if they get too scattered. And Barachiel does seem to, though she always finds her way back. That's why she runs the backbone of things in Heaven.]
There should be something laying around that can do the trick. I'm not really that tech-savvy, but 'complicated electronic device' I can handle.

[A pause, as he realises he didn't actually answer the question.]
I suppose if I had a, uhm, a 'screwdriver' and access to the most complicated eletrical devices we can find here, I might be able to improvise some tools on my own. These communicators would be ideal if I could dismantle them, but, well, so far that's been a bit of a dead end.

So when the guys breaks it down for him he gives him a grateful nod.]
A screwdriver and electrical devices. Got it.
I'll see what I can find for you.
I don't know what it is, but what's it do? Maybe there's something around here that fits the bill.
[He sighs, with the lurking but very strong suspicion that this person has no idea what he's talking about.]
I'm not the giving up type, you know, but I've been here for days and not a single one of the ideas I've had has turned out to be viable. Not one.
[Carter, at least, seems a little bit amused by that. She can already tell, these two could hardly have come from more different places.]
Well, y'know, and the part about the ideas not being viable. I hear that, big time. Even the stuff that should work, I didn't get to bring what I'd need for it. Instead, I got to bring a half-written ghost story. Totally useful, right?

Don't know about a hyperspanner, we don't have a lot, but I have some different things acquired in the lab/infirmary if you want to take a look.

[He clears his throat.]
I'd certainly be interested in going over a few things with you, though, if that would be alright. Maybe try to find some alternatives to the equipment I'm used to, or failing that, for pragmatism's sake it might be worth working out some kind of... rota, perhaps, for medical work? If we don't know how much longer we'll be here? It can't be easy being responsible 26/7 for the healthcare of everyone here on your own. I can't say yet how much use I might be, since, er, I'm afraid I've become rather reliant on my world's level of technology, but if there's anything I could do to help I'd be only too happy!
[Unless the thing he could do to help was shutting up, a feat which very few have been able to accomplish thus far.]

And I would be ecstatic to have another doctor here. I had another one who took the night shift, but she seems to have disappeared. As for technology, I can teach you a few things. I ended up doing a lot of field medication, so this isn't so off.
