[ video ] - Day 181

[ Sam wakes up in his room feeling groggy and disorientated. It doesn't take him long to notice that this is not his room back at the Bunker and that, alone, is enough to put him on edge.

The dizziness only adds to it. He tries to clear his mind enough to poke at the smartphone which triggers the message. Cape Kore? Science Center? What the hell? What kind of kidnappers kidnap someone and leave them with a freakin' phone?

He pushes himself to his feet - bad mistake - a wave of nausea passes over him and standing up is incredibly challenging. Walking? Forget it. He flops back on the bed and toys with the phone some more, until he finds the video setting. ]

Uh... [ Way to show intellect there, Sam. ] The hell just happened? Was I roofied?

... Dean? ... Cas?

[ Lost moose is lost. ]

[Meja is, in truth, slightly preoccupied. There's the situation with Garrett's hearing, and the general issue of the boxes still laying around. Some of them still unopened, and there's no telling whether or not their notes are telling the truth.

But she knows Sam went missing, so when she sees him, she frowns, opening a feed. What do roofs have to do with it?]

Sam? Are you all right?

[ Poor Sam didn't get the luxury of choosing. He got hit with the effects from the box without having to open one. Lucky guy!

His brows furrow. ]

You know my name?

[...uh oh. Not good. Meja bites her lower lip, frowning.]

Yes, er, we... know each other. Knew each other. You've been here before, to the Science Center. Do you remember any of it?

[ So, she's not his kidnapper then? Good to know. Or maybe she is and maybe she's just good at lying...

He'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Mostly, because it's easier than trying to think too hard through the nausea. ]

Sorry. No recollection of ever being here before.

[Meja is only good at lying in certain circumstances. Usually dire ones. In dire situations, when lives are on the line? She can't be beat.]

Unfortunately, there's precedent for that. This place likes to tamper with memories. Only certain people remember being here, when or if they go and return. But your brother's here. And many others from your Realm.

Huh. They mess with memories? Sounds like the angels. [ What no, that's not a hint of bitterness in his voice. Nope. Not at all... Maybe a smidgen. ]

My brother's here? Dean? He's here?

Yes, we have those, too. Although they're just as trapped as the rest of us. [Maybe that'll do something for Sam's bitterness. Who knows.] I haven't seen Dean in a while, but he's here, yes, as far as I know. Also your friend, Castiel. I think this place has a special fondness for people from your world.

The angels are trapped too? What kinda place is this? [ And can he find out how they're holding angels so he can use that knowledge back home? ]

Have you been here long?

A powerful one. Technology or magic, or perhaps both. [Meja smiles sympathetically.] It's called the Science Center, with all that entails. There used to be scientists. We haven't seen them since we were forced to evacuate here from a town they were monitoring. You can still see it on the cameras in the observation room. I haven't been here as long as some, but it's been... oh, many months.

[ If they weren't trapped here then this place would be fascinating to Sam's nerd senses. There is so much he wants to learn about this place and all it's secrets; and as soon as the dizziness passes he is so going to investigate. ]

There's recordings? You said the rooms move, but any idea where this observation room is?

I don't think there are video recordings. When we arrived in this facility, it was like everything had been... cleaned. No notes, no tapes. There are books in the library, but nothing on this place. It's all very maddening.

[She pauses.]

You'll have to find the room yourself, I'm afraid; it changes like everything else. But if you want to track it down and need company, you know how to get a hold of me.

[Wandering around this place as a new person is somewhat nerve-wracking. She knows from the past.]

Damn. Recordings would've been an awesome way to learn more about this place. Guess I'll just have to see what else I can figure out about this place. And if you wanna join in then the more the merrier, right?

Ja. [Meja smiles. The more, the less likely getting lost is going to feel frustrating. Or worse.] Even if I've never found anything, it doesn't stop me from looking, when I have some free time. [The plants do take up a fair portion of her time. Especially pruning. And figuring out who can take some pruning without dying.] I'm afraid whoever cleaned house wanted to make this place more frustrating.

[ Sam returns the smile. Teamwork, right? The more research nerds who group together the better! And plants are kinda awesome too. Just... don't let Sam near them. He might kill them. ]

Isn't it always the way?

[He would have to try very hard to kill these. She chuckles.]

One can hope for untidy kidnappers. It does happen, sometimes. It's unfortunate that I know that.

[Sometimes people think kidnapping a Valkyrie — a Lightforged, even — is a good idea. They're wrong. Only this place hasn't regretted it.]

Had a lot of kidnapping experience? Me too. More than is probably healthy.

[ At least this place is better than Hell. ]

[Meja laughs quietly, nods.]

People have tried. And mostly failed, but they have tried.

[Usually they're just in over their heads.]

I would think, however, that even once would be more than is healthy.

I'll try and remember to never try kidnapping you. You must be something quite special to gain the attention of so many kidnappers in the first place, and to thwart them.

Maybe I should take lessons.

Oh, that's me, certainly. Popular with everyone. [Dry as a bone.] I ensure they... re-think their decision. I try to do it as peacefully as I can, but some only respond to a sword shoved in their direction.

A sword? Yeah. Definitely remind me to stay on your good side. I've had knives and fangs and claws and pointy things in my face before, I'd like to try and avoid the sword as long as possible.

[Meja laughs quietly.]

Don't worry, Sam. I doubt you'll be giving me a reason anytime soon.

Great. Since well, I'd kinda like to get to know you better and usually when people stab me the friendships don't last that long.

Stabbing someone does tend to ruin friendly relations.

[The valkyrie could keep a straight face if she tried, but she's not trying.]

I've learned a lot in my life, but that's an important lesson.

Great. Good. Glad we've established a non-stabbing rule.

[ Hey! Be gentle. The poor moose feels like a wobbly baby gazelle. It makes it hard to think too clearly. ]

[Carter is pretty much just cringing at her screen when the video starts up, but it resolves to something closer to sympathy before she begins to speak. New arrivals, super fun, right?]

I dunno how much luck you're going to have, there. I'm really sorry, but here is a pretty long way from home. Wherever home is to you, I mean.

[ Isn't it so much more fun when the new arrival is flaily like a fawn or a baby giraffe? So many limbs. So little balance. ]

Is it common for people to just turn up like this? Is there any pattern to it?

[Okay, actually, that's just kind of funny. She's going to have to try not to giggle a little. Hope Sam's not too easily insulted.]

Kinda, yeah. There isn't a schedule to it or anything, there might be a pattern for what kind of people wind up here, but I can't say for sure.

[ He's got pretty thick skin. ]

What kind of people usually wind up here? [ Despite the dizziness and the nausea, he's definitely slipping into research mode. ]

When I first got here, I thought it was because of the whole 'psychokinetic' thing. Tends to catch people's attention. As far as I know, nobody else matches that description, though, so that's probably not it.

There seem to be a couple other people who are familiar with magic, so I was thinking maybe it's that? [That seems to remind her of something, and she spends a few seconds frowning offscreen.] ...But there is no way this place doesn't have a couple Magi on the payroll, or at least an absolute buttload of spellwork laid down somewhere.

Okay, so really, your guess is as good as mine.

Spellwork? [ That definitely gets Sam's attention. ]

So this place isn't boring then. Do most people arrive feeling like they've been roofied, or is that just me?

Yeah. I mean, it's either magic or technology crazy enough that it might as well be. Things don't stay where you leave them, and I mean rooms and hallways and stuff.

So, yeah, not boring is a pretty good way to put it. Personally, I don't remember feeling anything other than confused, so you probably just had some bad luck. Or showed up at a really bad time.

The rooms move? Huh. That's something new. [ Poor Moose. What has he gotten himself into this time? Sam is just a giant magnet for bad luck. No wonder Cape Kore dragged him along for fun. ]

It's some real Hogwarts stuff. Uh, if they have those books where you're from.

I'm Carter. It's nice to meet you? [She's still not sure if that's really an appropriate thing to say, given everything.]
