[Elle appears on screen, and though she's in focus and still, the light behind her seems to be flickering, and there's a crackling sound in the background.]

Okay. So let's say, hypothetically, that I was looking at the camera and it sparked or something and I started- and then a fire magically appeared.

I mean, like, not a fire. But, you know. Um.

Anyway. Never mind.

Does anyone know how to use the fire extinguisher? Because I finally got clothes I like [and even though she knows this could potentially qualify as an emergency situation, she takes a second to drop her wrist to show a low-cut blouse] and don't want them to burn.

Not that they would. Just. You know. If there were a hypothetical fire...

[Martha doesn't answer as she's over right away. Fires, as they do, tend to spread and luckily for Elle, this one hadn't gotten very far by the time Martha was there. She grabbed the fire extinguisher and set it out only one heart-stopping moment.]

[Sweaty and coughing, she finally makes her way back to Elle.]

Fire extinguisher lessons. You really don't know how to use one of these?

[Elle stands out of the way and lets Martha work, and she does so with the ease of someone who has had other people clean up her messes fairly often. As a matter of fact, she's about to leave when Martha comes back.]

Do I look like a firefighter to you?

You look like an able-bodied and able-minded person who's stuck here along with the rest of us. So come here. We're doing a lesson. It's all quite simple.

[Elle's pretty sure she's the only one who can hear her groan, but the face she makes is one she means for Martha to see. It's not the most polite face by a long shot.]

[Nonetheless, she goes back over, dragging her feet the whole way.]

Fine. Simple. Show me.

[And now she's just going to cross her arms and pretend they don't function anymore, because there's no way in hell she'll ever do anything remotely like work. Like touching the fire extinguisher again. It's a dangerous precedent to set.]

[Martha held out the fire extinguisher.] You can't learn without doing.

[Elle holds up a hand full of sparks.] What, are you strong enough to do this?

[Martha's eyes widen in startle, but she's just a curious as startled.]

Now that is very surprising. How do you do it?

[Elle almost looks back at the fire damage but stops herself in time. Distraction? Yessssssss. Distraction...]

I generate electricity. It's a gift. Cool, right?

[She waves her hand around.] I can throw it at things, too.

[But since that was how the fire got started, she won't do that again. Yet.]

[Martha watches intently.]

So you're not human? Alien?

[She cuts the sparks, offended.]

[Martha's eyes widened realizing she offended.]

Sorry! I've never met a human with... abilities. But I've seen plenty of aliens who can do impressive things.

[Elle is appeased enough that she stops being quite so threatening, relaxing and playing with the lightning between her fingers. There's something childish about it.]

[Martha smiles.] But that's brilliant! Do all humans in your world have powers?

[If Elle hadn't seemed appeased enough before, she certainly as now. She was actually very close to liking this woman, actually.]

Nope! Only the special ones, like me.

[Shortage of ego? What's that.]

[Martha was still holding the fire extinguisher, completely unaware it was in her hand. She stepped forward.]

Were you born with them? Or did the abilities come from an outer source?

Outer space? Seriously? Like... I don't know. How could I possibly get powers from outer space?

[How did that even make sense?]

Outer source... like the comic book heros. You know, the Spiderman... um he was bitten by a radio active spider. Were you struck by lightning one to many times... Or were you born with the powers?

[She doen't mean to be creepy or weird or anything. Martha is genuinely curious.]

I was born with them. [She frowns as she studies a new burst of lightning in her hands. It helps her think, sometimes, just being able to play with it.]

Do you mean like synthetic powers? [She shakes her head.] No. I was born with these.

[You'd have to be stupid to get synthetic powers. And this was coming from a girl whose ability had killed her mother when she was born.]

[Martha nodded like she understood.] I've never met a human with powers before. I don't necessarily know how it works.

[She looked down at the fire extinguisher in her hand] Right! How to use a fire extinguisher. Here take this.

[Elle is much more cooperative this time around. If Martha had manipulated her, it hasn't occurred to her yet. And if Martha has manipulated her, then it was extraordinarily well played. She does just as is directed and might even actually be listening for more directions.]

Right. So when there's a fire, there's a pin see? [Martha points to the pin that's hanging off the side of the extinguisher]

First thing you do is pull the pin... which is already done. Then you aim it at the base of the fire, and spray in a sweeping motion.

[Martha hadn't intended to manipulate the other woman, but it worked out nicely.]

[Her brow furrows as she concentrates on what Martha's saying. When she's done talking, Elle nods.]

Pull pin like a grenade and then point it at the fire and make it rain. I can do that. [Or at least, she thinks she can. She'll find out if there's another fire.]

I'm Elle. [So... she can make a fire and then clean it up with an even bigger mess. That's... cool.]

What kind of doctor are you?

Trauma mostly. [Though lately she'd been preforming a lot of alien autopsies as well.]

Mostly I go into emergency zones and help the people there.
