[ Guess who doesn't look quite so happy? Okay, she hasn't been happy since she got here but the more she hears the less happy she is. Especially when it doesn't come with explanations ]

I've got two problems. Other than being here. [ And other than the other problems ]

So everyone keeps talking about how we don't have much food, and that we'll end up being cannibals, but no one is saying anything about actually getting more food.

[ Does that worry no one? Is she the only one with priorities? Until she asks she'd probably think yes. So she's asked ]

I for one am not eating anyone. [ Not unless you're- Okay. She probably wouldn't- definitely wouldn't go cannibal on even the hottest guy ] And even if people died we'd still run out. [ And she wasn't advocating killing anyone either just pointing it out ]

So. Is anyone else even concerned? [ Bring your explanations and plans and everything she's not yet been told minus the food scare ]

Second. For everyone who says I've been here before? That wasn't me. That was some other me. [ She's totally going with Veronica's explanation thank you Veronica ] But. [ For the ever curious: ] I want to know what you know. About me- other me. Preferably now.

[ That's it. You can go now, unless you want to give her any kind of information? But she's done ]

Cannibalism is so last year. [ Sigh. ] But at least someone is bringing it up. I thought maybe I was supposed to start stripping the trees of their leaves like an over-eager and glamorous giraffe.

[ Wrong species, but he doubts Lydia can see his cat eyes. She sounds like a Mundane. ] I can't help you with the second, I definitely don't recognise you.

Only if you wanted to suffocate.

[ And nope. No cat spotting here. Should she be glad? ] I think you're the first.

I didn't know the other you, so I can't help you there, but as for the food, the situation's not so dire. [ He offers a small smile, because the last thing any of them need right now is some new person getting everyone worked up into a panic. Panic about the food situation is bad and could devolve into violence very quickly; it certainly has in the past ] I wouldn't go uncorking the chianti just yet.

[ Okay... maybe she won't get that reference, but oh well ] Quite a few people go into the woods and hunt regularly. Some of the rest of us have been working on planting things - fruit, vegetables, you get the drill. There are plans for a greenhouse. So - don't freak out, okay? We're not just sitting here doing nothing.

The only food shortage is the stuff that comes pre-packaged. And maybe fresh veggies and fruit, but there's people working to fix that, so it won't get to a cannibalism scenario. There's game in the woods, fish to catch, and people with foraging skills can grab nuts, roots, and other vegetation to keep us going.

But I would kill for a milkshake and some cheesecake.

I wasn't freaking out. [ It certainly wasn't her freaked out voice but it was a worrying situation. Although she's not quite satisfied or confident than the situation is good ]

Fine. You're doing. But how much is there? And what about when it runs out and nothing has grown, or if you couldn't kill something that day? [ She's just... expressing all the options? Covering all bases. No one is starving ]

[ Erik would be better at this, he'd know how to explain the plans they have for growing their own food. He might even be pleased with her reaction in some ways - he knows how he feels about the way the people here are blind to what little they have - but he's not sure if she's someone who would even catch his attention in the first place.

So it's why he's here. Besides, he's worried. ] Have you eaten since you arrived, Lydia? If not I have to simply insist you come over and let me fix you something up.

[ He can deal with the repercussions later if need be. ]

Good. I wasn't going to offer myself. [ Or take anyone that offered or- no cannibalism. That's good ] I just want to know that if we're stuck that we won't starve, and that people know what they're doing. [ Sure there's fish but can people fish? But she's harped. Moving on before people hate her ]

A very chocolate cookie. [ It was a bad day? ]

There's a man in charge of the remaining supplies, he's been rationing them pretty well so far. If you've got an issue with that, he's the one you need to talk to. [ Ned is being helpful, of course, but there's just the tiniest hint of impatience in that reply. Blame it on the stress inherent in the situation. ]

If you feel like making yourself useful, you could always help out with the gardening. It's okay if you don't know anything about it, we could always use a pair of extra hands. [ It's an invitation, but also something like the more polite version of a challenge: it's a lot easier to complain and question than it is to contribute ] We already have some things growing in. The process was, ah. Accelerated. Due to. Unusual circumstances.

[ OH it's trust guy again. Hi. At least he isn't trying to placate her with a reassurance of their food without answering her question?

Not that he answered her question but... okay, food does sound good. No she has not eaten, not what she would consider food (or an actual meal, anyway - berries were... not that). So she is actually replying without really any argument, and less of 'everything' that she gave him last time.

But still some questioning ] What are the options? [ Feel free to interpret that as meal choice or if she has a choice on him cooking ]

And who's that? [ Names please Ned if you're going to go pointing fingers. And then she can complain at why no one got her any food ]

I know how to garden. [ Okay, not garden specifically but she knows her botany from biology class, and then the extra that she read which is why she was pretty much the only one to ace the test... and get extra extra credit. She also didn't specifically agree to help. She'd rather check it out first before doing anything. Though actually getting her hands in there? Not so likely ]

Unusual circumstances? You've just described all of here.

Dubious looking cans of vegetation. [ He smiles a little, gentle as anything. It's a joke, or it's trying to be. ] Everything that my ten year old self would have balked at. But if you'd let me I could heat something up for you.

[ There's a shortage surely, but to see someone actively not eating would be terrible and he thinks all of her bristling attitude is hiding a further vulnerability. ]

[ Lydia's a good girl that eats her veggies? She's smart, okay, she knows they're good even if she hates them. And she's good and eats her food and she's not really in a position to toss it up anyway right now so

Though there is a part of her that will kick herself now: ] Why? [ But she has a reason for that question, even if it's not explained. Why is he helping? She wasn't exactly kind when he tried to help and he still is. At school it's different but he doesn't know her ]

Slow down there, Hannibal, no one's suggesting we resort to Donner party tactics just yet. And if they are, uh, I recommend keeping your distance from them. And maybe investing in a new pair of running shoes, just to be on the safe side.

Because I worry about people.

[ It's the simplest answer and the most honest. If Lydia is going to keep pushing back then he won't make a pretense. ] I know a place like this is frightening and I know it would be even worse to be alone in it. [ She reminds him a little of Raven, bright and bubbly and suspicious. He can't help it. ]

I don't have an ulterior motive. I know that's hard to believe. But perhaps if we meet in person it will be easier?

Apparently we're set, not that anyone's said how much there is. [ Just that people hunt and they're trying to grow things but amounts are more reassuring... if they're good amounts ]

Well, it's not on my immediate to do list.

[ Maybe him being a warlock would be a little bit too much to bear.] I'm new. By about a day.

Then you're smart. [ Shockingly some would probably still risk it ] Three days. At least you'll get this information quick.

[Have an unfamiliar face on the screen, a skinny, beaky-nosed middle-aged man who looks sort of apologetic by default.]

I've heard there are people hunting from the woods, and I've spoken with somebody who's part of a gardening project, so there are definitely efforts being made already. We're also next to the ocean and I know some people have been fishing successfully. I'm not sure I'd listen to anyone who tells you we're going to resort to cannibalism, because under the circumstances that seems alarmist.

[ Yes, Ned knows a non-answer when he hears one. He would be disappointed, but he hadn't expected her to step up and volunteer. People here are mostly friendlier and more willing to help than he's used to from back home, but his general impression of people hasn't changed: she'd rather let someone else worry about the actual work. ]

Yes. Anyway, the point is, there shouldn't be a gap between supplies running out and our crops coming in, barring unforeseen circumstances.

[ Lydia can actually accept that, accept that as a reason why someone would be nice. She's not used it, although before here she didn't really talk to too many adults, and the ones that she did she wasn't quite as prepared to trust. (The counsellor was probably the closest comparison to this but she wasn't as trust-vibey)

So Lydia nodded - slowly. This place is scary, with everything she's been told and not told, and ulterior motive or not she does need that food. So she'll agree, and then take another look at everything and him and whether she can trust him ]

Okay. [ It's a better agreement than normal - normally it would have been 'fine' and not as agree-y, more forced ] Where?

Well, when they've heard that everything's running out... [ Yeah, it still was a leap and very worst case scenario but it had seemed to get everyone's attention ]

Successfully. How successfully? I don't even know how many people there are.

[He shrugs. Food supplies don't exactly bother him, considering he doesn't need to eat.]

There's enough. 'Sides, last time stocks got to running low, there was a food drop. Whoever's brought us here isn't gonna let us starve until they're done with us. It'd be a waste of resources.

And who's he? Kidnapped or kidnapper? [ Information is a useful thing ]

So you're prepared for soil types, a lack of rain, irrigation and bad crops? [ Okay, some of those could be unforseen circumstances but some plants grew better in different soil types and if they want good crops and plenty of food they should know this ]

So what's the point of this if they just do that? Or why don't they do that more? [ Really, she's glad that there's an option that they won't starve but... it seems pointless? Make them run low on food and then just give it. It wasn't the most sense-giving thing ]

To watch us squirm? [He shrugs.] Maybe they've got a budget. Only drop in new resources when they really need to.
