chapter one | video | day 93
[ The feed turns on to display a particularly worried-looking blonde woman, frowning more like an annoyed mother than anything. ]
You know, I'm getting major All Hell Breaks Loose flashbacks right now. Waking up in a creepy abandoned town with a bunch of people I presumably don't know? Yeah. I have a feeling this won't end well. I mean, unless the Winchesters are here by some off chance. And then...
Well, honestly, things might end worse. As much as I love them — [ she sighs wistfully, smiling to herself at the thought of her boys, then quickly returns to a slightly more concerned expression ] — they aren't exactly the best good luck charms. Even when they had a good luck charm.
[ She leans in closer, holding her hand at the side of her mouth, lowering her voice as if she's admitting a secret, though she looks particularly excited to be sharing this not-so-secret. ]
One of my favorites, by the way, Bad Day at Black Rock.
[ And then the big thing occurs to her and she frowns again. ]
I just hope there aren't demons involved. Sam didn't exactly let me keep the demon slaying knife as a souvenir for ganking my first black-eyed SOB. All he gave me was a big fat annulment and a broken heart...
[ She sighs, resigned. Nothing she can do about that now, and there's not really any point in making a big deal out of her predicament here. It's not like she has anyone back home who will miss her. Except maybe her Twitter followers. But even then... She shrugs, then offers something resembling a smile. ]
Well, at least I still have my journal. Maybe now I can get to work on that fanfic I've been meaning to write...

But... the world's still there.
video;
A brain dead person with machines breathing for them and shocking their heart into beating is still there as well.
video;
[ At least, he doesn't think so. ]
video;
[ It's not said with anger or disgust. If anything, it's hollow, perhaps even a little sad. ]
video;
[ The human race has done so much. Cars and airplanes and space ships and technology and science. They've accomplished a lot in their time on the Earth. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. ]
video;
[ The look he gives Chuck is almost gentle, save it's so unyieldingly firm. ]
Human do many neat things. They have more opportunity than anything I've seen before. And what do they chose to do with it? They do so much damage to one another. Cause so much harm. I wouldn't call that a species which is healthy.
Didn't you pay attention to what I said to Castiel and Dean?
[ When he declared God to be dead. ]
Think of recent human history.
video;
[ This conversation got really serious really fast. This isn't a conversation Chuck thinks he wants to have, not as Chuck the prophet who won't be taken seriously. ]
..You can't just focus all on the negative. There's good too.
video;
What good Chuck? What good do you see? They are so used to suffering, to hardship, that they don't even see what is going on around them. And that isn't counting the ones who wouldn't care, even if they did, because they are too busy trying to guess which mud puddle of water is least likely to kill them or their children, or find a few mouthfuls of food, or worse.
video;
After all, it worked with Balthazar.
He shakes his head. ] No, you're... you're not looking in the right places.
I mean... yeah, we fight each other and some people aren't very well off, but... that doesn't mean we're bad. And there are homeless shelters and soup kitchens and donation centers and all that too. Bad is always easier to believe than good, and bad is much worse than good, but that doesn't mean there's no good at all.
And, I mean... we try.
[ Chuck is, unconsciously and purposefully, echoing the words of Gabriel. "But a lot of them try. To do better, to forgive." He wonders if Raphael will notice. ]
video;
Remember when Ellen died? Jo? That happens more times a day than you could understand. Worse? Are those praying for it to end, for their suffering to be over, but it just lingers, on and on.
[ That was what bothered him, pulled on him, drained him, there was so much suffering.
And yes, he notices. It makes his jaw tighten. ]
It's not enough, Chuck, and it's not fair.
video;
[ And that really, he supposes, is the real question. Chuck looks at Raphael, confusion and helplessness in his eyes because no, really, he doesn't get it. ]
We're not angels. We weren't born--we weren't made that way. And, I mean. Angels aren't all good either. Uriel wasn't.
I mean, yeah, people die and people suffer and people are bad. But people are born, too, and they help and they're good. You can't just... look at all the bad all the time. It's not practical.
video;
I want you to prove Lucifer wrong.
[ It's more complicated than that - he wants humanity to be worth them being abandoned for. Worth watching Michael tear into Lucifer over. Worth breaking their family over. ]
video;
[ Even as Chuck the Prophet, he knows what Lucifer thinks of humans. But Lucifer was also incredibly biased in the matter, and trying to prove Lucifer wrong was like trying to nail jello to a tree. ]
That's not-- What does Lucifer have to do with it?
[video | private]
Lucifer hates you all, not without reason. He's right, even Gabriel admits that, about how flawed humanity is. The last couple of centuries I've watched as all of you created a world full of suffering. You have all the tools to make something wonderful and yet...you don't.
So I want you as a species to prove Lucifer wrong. He doesn't have to admit it, but his points can be. None of you have, thus far.
