Day 98; Video 004

[Brigid is looking a bit frazzled. She'd come to the house to find a few things, maybe use the kitchen, and talk to her friend. The problem is, Charlie's scent is fading. There's something wrong. And she isn't sure where her friend is.]

Has anyone seen Charlie McGee?

She isn't at the house and I can't find her anywhere around the town, or in the woods. I've been busy, but she's normally pretty easy to find.

[She bites her lip.]

House ten is empty. If you've seen her, or if she's out there, please contact me?

[ He nods, as if to say he was thinking along the same lines, because even if he sucks at plans, he should probably try to formulate one, even if it's destined to fail. ]

It can wait. Do you want to team up, see if we can pick up and track Charlie's scent anywhere?

[It takes her a minute to answer. Then, she shakes her head.]

St. Raphael says she's gone. I'll get the rest of the boxes and come back to the lighthouse.

[ He gives a nod and a gruff hum of acknowledgement; he's still not sure how he feels about the angels, but if she trusts them then he's not going to comment. Raphael did help at the full moon, though, so there's that. ]

I'll meet you there.

Of course.

[she grabs the last three boxes and carries them out to the lighthouse. they now, at least, have dishes that they can eat off of, even if they don't go to the newly rebuilt diner.

Brigid smells him before she sees him.]

Derek?

[ Stepping out from the side of the lighthouse, Derek approaches her with an ease he lacks when others are around, and doesn't hesitate in taking the boxes, even though he's more than certain she can handle them herself. ]

Is this everything?

[Brigid gives him a bright smile. He’s broodier and far more silent than her Alpha, but he’s still a nice guy as she’d told Lydia. She likes him. He certainly hasn’t been standoffish with her.]

This is the last of it. That’s got the dishes and silverware in it. I can start dinner, if you’re hungry?

[ Lydia might need more work to be won over, but the fact she helped bring his uncle back from the dead isn't exactly something either of them appreciated. But a beta without an alpha who he can help, someone who shares similar secrets with that allow him to trust in ways he can't with others - it makes a difference. ]

You cook? [ He's fighting a surprised smile, the fact she's offering to include him in her meal time not something he expected. ] I can wait if you want to settle in, and I'll make a start on unpacking.

Of course I cook.

[Brigid says it matter-of-factly, as if it should be obvious. To her it is. Her Da had been away a lot, and it had fallen to her to feed both of them.]

If you’d unpack the dishes and silverware I can start what I’d planned for dinner. I’ll finish unpacking while it cooks.

[She’s a multitasker, because otherwise, nothing would ever get done.]

Okay.

[ Heading into the lighthouse, Derek barely thinks as he manoeuvres the boxes up and through to the kitchen, putting them down on the side and opening the first one up to sift through for what they need.

He works quietly, looking around to decide where it's best to store what he does remove. ] Do you need help with preparations?

[Brigid’s fingers are swift and efficient. Her time fishing has yielded some results that are at least, edible. Her time in the library has given her knowledge about local plants, and fungi that can be eaten. While it may not be a fancy meal, they won’t starve.

And working with an Alpha nearby is so comfortable, so familiar that Brigid actually begins humming softly to herself. It’s an ancient hymn that her grandmother had taught her. She glances over her shoulder.]

No, I should be fine. Shouldn’t take but twenty minutes or so. I wish we had butter.

[They’re running low on a lot of things, and times are getting leaner. She also wishes they had a goat. Or sheep. But goats would be better.]

[ Derek finds himself enjoying this, her company, their solitude away from the rest of the captives here, even if it is against his better judgement; it's not as if he's really ever figured out a balance with it anyway.

But she's safe, definitely not a threat, and the best part is that although he may be an alpha, not unlike Scott, he's not her alpha, which helps him to relax around her. He doesn't have any real control over her, even if he can sense that his presence help, and he finds comfort in that, in that he can't do or say anything that might put her in danger, or at least nothing that she can't fight against him over.

The tune makes him glance over with interest; it's nothing he's heard before, but it's nice to fill in the silence, the last of his tension slipping away. They'll be okay here, he decides, at least for the time being. ]

We'll make do. [ He's accepting that there's not much choice here, but that's okay, he's used to living on the bare essentials. ] Tomorrow, I'll go out and see what I can hunt down.

[There’s a familiarity, a gentleness to pack that Brigid takes great comfort in. She needs it in her life, more than most wolves. She thrives on having the pack around and reconnecting with them at the end of the day.

Brigid likes hearing Derek moving around, and smelling him around the lighthouse. It reminds her that she isn’t alone, that her prayers were answered, that everything would be alright. Okay, maybe not everything but she likes knowing that there’s help, if she needs it.

Her humming continues, counting the cadence to her chopping. It’s an old habit she has from making dinners for her and her Da and then the Alpha’s family.]

Oh, I know. I was just wishing aloud. [She turns to glance at him.] Actually, I’d almost rather a bit of flour and yeast. I’m not the best at bread, but I could try my hand at it.

[ However much he uses the excuse that he needed a pack for when the alphas arrived in town, Derek created a pack of his own with the power and ability to do it because it was something that he craved; he didn't just lose his family because of the fire, he lost his entire pack, and he felt each and every one of those loses for so long. After Laura, and with Scott not quite working out the way he had hoped, he longed for it that much more, even if he knew it was his fault he lost everyone he loved in the first place.

But she's not technically pack, which takes a weight from his shoulders; he fully intends to help her as much as he can, both as an alpha and as a fellow werewolf if it should ever come to it, but it doesn't change the fact.

For now, though, he finds himself liking her company, and it doesn't hurt that she's not much older than his younger sister would have been if she were still alive; he's not looking to replace her, he knows he never could, but it's nice, to have a dynamic that could have been normal to him under different circumstances. ]

I could help. I'm far from being a master in the kitchen, but I have my uses. Between the two of us, it's probably going to be harder to get hold of the ingredients.

[If he asked? She'd seriously consider becoming part of his pack. Her discomfort with her Alpha has grown over the last couple of months. She doesn't understand his reasoning behind almost anything that he does.

Brigid laughs, brushing hair away from her mouth, and turns to look at him, actually smiling for a change. Something they both should probably do more.]

Anytime you want to help, I won't stop you. I'm just so used to doing it all. I cooked for my Da, and then helped the Alpha's wife cook all the time.

[She sighs, stirring dinner on the stove.]

Supplies are going to be in short supply, well, shorter than they already are. I like history, but I don't want to live it.

[ He's tempted to ask, but if he does he thinks it's probably only fair to warn her of the chaos he left behind when he was snatched up and thrown here, and he's not sure if he's quite ready to divulge that information yet. But then again, maybe it doesn't really matter, not while they're stuck here with no way of escape.

There's a hint of a smile that touches his own lips as he watches her, thinks she's got a nice smile and if he can bring it out more then he'll try harder to make it happen. ]

Is it something you actually enjoy doing? [ Most might wonder if he actually even cares, but he sounds genuinely interested; if she does, he'll leave her to it, but otherwise he'll happily share the work. ] I'm no stranger to living with the bare minimum, but it's different here knowing there's no other option. I'm learning to resent it.

[Brigid is passive, and she is subservient, but she also thinks of the entire pack, before she speaks. She considers the ramifications of her actions on everyone. That one time during the full moon didn’t count, since she’d been… not herself.

But this? This is nice. This is comfortable and comforting and something she wants more of in her life.]

Sometimes. I much prefer slow cookers, to cooking on the stove. I used to cook for a week at a time, when Da was alive.

[Her lips thin for a moment as she thinks about their precarious position.]

I don’t mind going without. I’m a cop’s kid, and they don’t make fantastic money. But the way supplies go here, people are going to begin to starve, if we don’t get a few basics soon. Flour, sugar, rice, oats, some vegetables.

[ He looks thoughtful as he listens, struggling not to compare her situation growing up with a certain someone he knows back home, but as much as he feels the unfamiliar urge to tell her as much, he holds back; old habits die hard. ]

There's land around the lighthouse. If we can get what we need, we could attempt to grow our own.

[She already knows about Stiles and his father, luckily. She just doesn't mention it, because what's the point?

Brigid cocks her head to the side, thinking. She chews on her bottom lip between her teeth.]

There might be seeds left from the communal garden planting? I don't know. St. Balthazar is the one to ask, I think.

[ He hums to acknowledge he's listening, but he's frowning at the thought of having to run into the angel again if he's going to ask. ]

I won't hold my breath.
