Martha's 3rd - Video/Action - Day 98

[To anyone who has been to the clinic when it was still there, that's where you'll see Martha when the video opens up.]

In an attempt to be of some use around here, I'm opening up the clinic again. I have my credentials from Royal Hope Hospital in London circa 2008. I also have experience treating non-humans thanks to some travel in both time and space. Most recently, I have gained experience as a field medic.

For anyone who has been seeing Dr. Barrett as your physician while here on this island, you may keep seeing her. But more doctors are always helpful.

If you have any questions or would like to sit for a physical, you may talk to me here or come visit the clinic. If not, that's perfectly fine too.

[Of course, baseline physicals would be much better, but she's not going to push anyone. Martha wants to be trusted above anything else.]

[The attitude makes some sense to him, as he assumes she's been in a regimented army structure like he has and had her basic needs provided for]

So you'll be hunting and gathering in your spare time? Doctor Barrett takes payments from those she honours with her best treatment.

[He seems rather taken with Mina, if the way he says her name is any indication]

You'll have a harder time demanding a trade for your needs in the future if people get used to you being the free doctor.

Does she now? Then perhaps I should talk to her to make sure I have a comparable price.

[She has to remember this isn't the resistance. Well, she does know that, but it's hard to remember because conditions seem to be only marginally better. And in the resistance, people would have given her food and water and shelter regardless of whether or not she had traded with them.]

A comparable price means you'll have to offer a comparable service.

[Even he realises that sounds a bit too harsh to someone useful enough to keep friendly, so he quickly adds.]

Not that I think you're unskilled, but she has powers suited to her role no human can wield.

Are you still interested in learning about the bears?

[He does seem a touch defensive regarding Mina.]

I'm sure she's very skilled. In fact I wouldn't hesitate to go see her when I need a doctor. But, I do know there are people here who are not exactly willing to see Dr. Barrett.

[And then she drops the subject because fighting with people is never a good thing.]

The bears do sound particularly interesting if you have something to tell me about them.

[From the look on his face he obviously think those people are fools, but he lets the subject drop too]

I know as much as there is to know about them. We made an escape attempt some weeks back and I took charge of organising a diversion in the woods. We learnt about the bears then. They're [He pauses slightly to remember the word people here recognised] robots, covered in bear fur. It's not well tanned, so they stink of rot to people with good noses.

We put up boundaries in the woods, but they burnt down. The first boundary's how far to the edge of the woods they'll chase you and the second is where you'll find them. They roam a few kilocostas in, but if they're on your tail they'll chase you to in less of a kilocosta of the edge. If you're not one of these overpowered demons, don't get near enough to one for it to notice you, because it'll be faster than you. They don't look up much, so you'll be fine a few costa up a tree.

Do they climb? I mean, if one were chasing me, would it be able to follow me up?

They're too heavy to climb far, so if you scrabble up to the light branches they won't be able to sink their claws in. They've got a long reach, though.

So climb quickly and climb high. That's actually extremely useful.

Of course it's useful. If I hadn't been able to give practical information after excursions I wouldn't have made it far in the army.

[It had been more rhetorical, but Martha lets him talk.]

Armies do train better than most places.

[He doesn't care how rhetorical something might be if there's a chance it could be a slight on his skills]

So I'm seeing around here. I never had to deal with civilians in a crisis back home and once I get out I hope I never have to again. They're like a flock of chickens; if they're not panicking, they're pecking around complaining.

Not all. Some civilians are actually quite useful. Don't sell all of them so short.

Some are useful, true. They're the ones who'd make good soldiers.

I don't know. Soldiers aren't all they're cracked up to be. Last ones I met fell in with an evil dictator.

[He snorts]

Was he evil because he was your enemy, or evil because of something more than a little empire building? A few burnt cities and casualties are normal if civilians don't get out of the way in time.

If you're worried because he was going around calling himself evil then I've got a neighbour who dresses up as a butterfly who can tell you all about working for those types.

Evil as in committed genocide against the entire human race except for the ones he used as slaves.

[She's not laughing.]

[Now that's surprising, though it explains where she got that survivor's gleam in her eye on her first night in Kore. He sits up, alert and interested]

There's a 'kin out there who's fiercer than an army of humans? We're the dominant kind on Gaia for a reason.

[Martha is not ready to talk about this. Not to a stranger.]

Fiercer? Don't know if that's the right term. Able to use hypnotism though to get in a position of power yes.

[Martha remembers she never actually found out his name.]

Sorry I don't know your name...

I have to go. House call.

[He said it quickly, but he's got no idea if that managed to get through before the video cuts off. Curses, he wanted to interrogate her more]
