first shot → video → day 103
[ It's fairly early when Allison poses her question to the network. Not obnoxiously so, just a little earlier than most would expect a teenager to be up of her own accord. She's already been for a run and there's a little evidence to show as much. She's just a little puffed, breathing returning to it's normal rate, and the clothes she's scavenged from the house aren't an ideal fit, but they're still closer to gym gear than the dress she'd arrived in (thanks scientists). Her hair is piled up in a loose bun on the top of her head, cheeks still just a little flushed, and she's only just at the door. She really should go inside and get herself sorted first, but network etiquette 101 is escaping her right now - and besides, the question is important.
There's a friendly smile at least, and for a moment she just eyes the feed a little, unsure of how to start. Finally it comes with a light clear of her throat and a sheepish look at the device on her wrist. ]
So I really hope this thing is working, or I'm going to look like an idiot. [ She laughs, a little awkward, and moves to sit down on the porch. The video jerks in response to the movement, but settles again once she does. ] I just have a quick question, nothing too taxing I promise.
[ She glances away for a second, a little stuck for how to pose the question without sounding like she's up to something, but finally just decides to bite the bullet. Everyone needs to defend themselves, right? That sea monster sure proved that. ]
I'm looking for a bow. Mine got...left behind, I guess, and I'd just- I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I had one. If anyone knows where there might be something like that around town or...God, even if you know how to make one, I'd really appreciate the pointers.
[ She pauses again, all awkward awkward Allison, and she's about to add something else.
Unfortunately at that point, the feed cuts out. Or perhaps fortunately, for the people listening. At that rate, they were going to be there all day. ]

voice.
[ Surprisingly, perhaps, Lydia is also up. Sure, she's always gotten up early for her strict beauty regime (okay, it's not that excessive) but this is different. This is 'Lydia Martin did not exactly sleep last night' extreme.
There's a tiredness in her voice, and definitely in her face which is why the video isn't on. She looks terrible, more afraid, worried and freaked out than anything, and it all leaks into her words. She's not certain (even though she knows people hunt) and she doesn't know how to ask for help ]
video.
That's good to know. [ She makes the comment half heartedly, distracted, and adds in a softer voice complete with a warm - if worried - smile. ] Hey...Lyd. You okay?

[Well, hey, he can't be nice to everyone.
Or even anyone.]
And bows are easy. You get a bit of ribbon, you make two bunny ears, Bugs runs around the tree and jumps in the pit - or possibly the trap - and hey presto, you're all done. I think that's about as easy as I can make it, but if you need any of the big words explained, I'm happy to help.
video
Sorry, you must have misunderstood. [ Or intentionally missed her point, but that's neither here nor there. ] I'm an archer. I don't want to get rusty just because I've been kidnapped for a social experiment in God knows where.
[ ....Something like that, anyway. ]

[Jo quirks a knowing smile at the girl on the other end of the feed. She hadn't clarified, but given the context, it's safe to assume. She's already looking bright-eyed and wide awake, having been an early riser ever since she was a kid. A necessity, when you helped run the family business.]
I can help you make one, if we get the materials. Might be able to make due with some fishing line for a bowstring if we're creative. There's plenty of that around. Shaping the arc shouldn't be too hard.
I wouldn't mind having one around, myself. I used to shoot.
[Now it's all shotguns for her, but she'll never forget the bow and arrow set her dad gave her when she was still in pigtails. Spent hours out back, shooting at targets, with every intention of growing up to follow in his footsteps.]
You think so? I never got around to learning how to make one - I know it's not rocket science, but the help would be appreciated. [ More than Jo probably realises and a lot more than Allison is willing to let on. She feels naked without a bow available to her here, and getting that back would be a huge step in making her feel more comfortable here. There are people she needs to be able to protect, after all. ]
You did? Competitive or more casually?

[Action] (If that's okay!)
You're up bright and early. Everything okay?
[Action] of course!
Sorry, did I wake you? [ The time isn't anything unusual for Allison, she's been running at this time for quite a while now, but it hadn't actually occurred to her that it might be a problem for someone else living with her. She gives Anita a quick apologetic smile, rubbing a hand over the back of her neck. ] Just thought I'd make use of this thing, ask a couple of questions.

Please tell me you know how to work one of those things, and you're not just looking for a way to pass the time. You can shoot your eye out, you know. Or someone else's eye.

Scout's honour. I...know my way around a bow and arrow, trust me. [ Not that her word means all that much here and she knows it, so after a brief moment of thought she adds. ] This is...kind of what I did back home. If you need a demonstration before handing weapons over, I won't hold it against you.

He flips his video on and holds up the bow by his bed. Next is the quiver he has full of arrows from home and the ones he's made since being here. ] I can help. Can give you pointers too. Names Clint.
[ video ]
Clint? I'm Allison. I'd...well. [ She gives a little sheepish laugh, shrugging her shoulders. ] I'd just about sell my left kidney for some of those pointers.
[ Because really, she knows a serious set up when she sees one, and Clint's gear isn't some 'shooting range on the weekend' type. That's professional. ]

I could help you make one if you like...
I have a compound bow but I've learned how to do upkeep on handmade ones.
[Granted it was a forced crash course but she still managed to make things work.]
If you like, I could trade you my compound for something of equal value until you can manage to make your own or I could help you make one before you'd need to use another one.
[Yeah she's...anxious to be helpful.]
video;
[ Oh God, let her love you, seriously. A handmade something or other is one thing, she'll take it over nothing in a heartbeat, but she's well aware that it won't be the same. Nothing can compare to professional craftmanship, and even if she's more of a recurve kind of girl - she won't look a gift horse in the mouth. ]
I don't have any weaponry with me. [ Well, one, but she's keeping that to herself for now. Who would suspect the seventeen year old of carrying a knife? ] I was looking to hunt, I can give you some of anything I catch?
[ Help, Allison isn't used to bartering. ]
video; sorry about the wait
video; sno problem!

There's a few books in the library about making them. Unless someone else has them.
The library, huh? [ She actually smiles a little at that, nodding quickly. ] Didn't even think to check. Thank you, ...?

[She hasn't got time to make one. Stupid things to do.]
...What can you give me in return?
[ Ugh. It feels underhanded and wrong just saying it, but needs must. Allison can hunt, once she gets her hands on that bow, but beyond that she's out of luck. She's clueless when it comes to anything touching on farming, but people have to be getting food around here somehow, right? ]

[ He understands the theory behind it and he has more strength than any humans, so it shouldn't be difficult. ]
What do you need it for?
She'll leave that one unsaid though, for now. At least until she's tested the waters a little, got a feel for the kind of people she's here with. ]
I used to compete, I don't want to get rusty.
[ Which would be an embarrassing set of priorities honestly, if Allison wasn't holding her cards so close to the chest. ]

I get it, okay? You're still mad, that's fine. [ She drags her teeth over her lip lightly, looking away for a moment before sighing. ] But I think we can both agree that everyone around here is going to be better off if I'm armed.

[ yeah okay, charlie's trying really hard to make a funny here. cheesy grin and all. though it drops after a second because she was never really good at that kinda thing. ]
Sorry. I don't have one, though. Legolas would be so disappointed with me. Can you shoot one?
video »
...Okay so it's a little funny, if cheesy as hell. That's okay, she's hardly turning down cheesy right now. She's not turning down anything that can lighten her mood a little. ]
Yeah, I guess. [ Guess meaning 'near flawlessly', of course. ] I don't suppose you know how to use one too?
