[It's taken Meja a few days to poke at the device on her wrist. She hasn't owned a piece of technology in... well, it's been a while. It's also been hard to concentrate, while becoming accustomed to separation from Yggdrasil. But at the moment, the device is her best bet for getting a question out among everyone in the Cape. So, she flicks a video feed on — once she figures out how to do that.

Meja's sitting in the park. Her closed white cloak covers her leather armor, but the silver and vaguely wolf-head-shaped epaulets on her shoulders are in full view. She runs her free hand through her short hair, anxiously, as she speaks, a gleaming silver armguard around her forearm.]

Hei hei, everyone. If I understand correctly, we all have these devices. I'd like to ask a question, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Has anyone seen an... unusually large raven about? Muttering to himself, maybe, or going after shiny objects? Perhaps reciting a morbid prophecy or two?

[...if he's stealing from these poor people, she's going to have a few bracing words for him.]

[Martha laughs.]

He just has to avoid telling me things about my future. He's pretty good at it. Able to keep timelines in his head much easier than I can.

Well, that's good. Seems like it would be complicated not to accidentally blurt something out.

I'm sure it is. It's more difficult not to ask him about my future though.

Would he tell you? If you asked. [Meja's absolutely sure that she doesn't want to know about her own history. It might solve 'problems', but... it's a double-edged sword. Especially when you're immortal.] Some things are better left undisturbed.

[Martha shook her head.]
It depends on the circumstance. I wouldn’t ask normally. I did demand certain information when I arrived simply because I was taken at an inopportune moment. But I’d rather live my life without knowing.

[Meja nods slowly.]

That's for the best, I think. When I was mortal, I learned a great deal of information about my future. While it better prepared me for certain things, my life was... never the same, afterward.

It doesn't help that time is very fluid. Knowing your future doesn't usually mean it'll stay that way. You can change it unless it's a fixed point. I'd rather not know what the future holds instead of finding something I like and never living because I'm waiting.

I take it that you've dealt with time a great deal, then.

[Meja, by comparison, is a little lost. The Norn always get grumpy when changes to prophecies are made. And, in the end, the chain around you told what you were going to do, even if it was to be a pain in the Norns' frosty behinds. Meja's certain that her own chain says plenty about that.]

A bit. My friend took me forward and back. It was quite thrilling. But I'm not exactly the best at explaining time.

[She nods slightly, smiling.]

Time is, by its nature, complicated. The Norn once explained a personal timeline to me and... how that worked, and my head felt light by the end of it. I'm afraid my memory of that occasion is rather fuzzy, perhaps as a result.

[That had been when she'd been mortal, and firmly opposing the Norn and their tyrannical views on fate. But still.]

I still find myself getting confused. Who are the Norn?

[Martha is curious by nature. It's why she ended up learning so much about time in the first place.]

[Meja pauses. How best to answer? There's the explanation the Norn would give, and the one she's tempted by. One guess as to which one is more flattering. But in the end, she decides to be diplomatic. Maybe they can still hear her, after all, and it's not as though she can fight back here.]

The Norn are... a group of immortal female Jotunn — Frost Giants, for the most part. When every creature is born, they fix a chain around them that only Norn and certain other immortal creatures can see. This chain tells what that being will do, in their lives, and how long they'll live.

[Diplomatic or not, her expression says that this doesn't agree with her.]

They enforce Fate, and prophecies.

[Martha grins as the other woman says it.]

They would not like my world then. Every decision you make changes your "fate." Unless, of course, you're part of a fixed point. But fixed points in time are much more rare than people believe.

No, they would not. Not one bit. ["Oh, if only they could go there," her tone says.] Of course, they don't like me either. We've had... many disagreements. I'm sure they're glad that I'm gone.

Don't subscribe to fate much then?

[Meja grins, a bit sheepishly.]

The Norn, were they here, would tell you that I've made a job out of averting and changing Fate.

Well then you'd fit in well in my world. Fate tends to change by the second.

That sounds exciting. [She says it a bit dryly, all the same.] I'm always glad to meet more people who don't subscribe to that nonsense, at least.

How do you change fate in a world where it's so important?

You hold your ground, carry a big stick. [Meja smiles.] Hopefully have a few loyal friends at your back. The gods like to talk tough, but most of them don't know how to deal with someone who doesn't bow at their feet.

Well, that is definitely one way I suppose. And it actually works in many cases. The worst is when you find a case where it doesn't.

Quite so.

[And she's experienced more than a few occasions where nothing had worked.]

I should let you go, Martha. But if you ever need someone to talk to, I doubt I'll be very busy, here.
