Martha's 6th - Open Voice/Action - Day 110

Is everyone OK. Clinic made it through OK. If you need a doctor, let me know where you are. I'll be there as soon as I possibly can. Also, be careful of aftershocks.

Action

[Martha had been in the clinic when the earthquake came. Once she realized what actually was happening, she braced herself under a door frame until the shocks were over.]

[Once they were over, she put out the message about help and packed her medkit. She began making her way through the town, looking for those she could help.]

[Ellen's eyes go hard.]

Back home, she killed Jo.

[Martha immediately regrets asking and hides behind her own hardness in defense. It was clear that whatever world Ellen and Jo were from, they had death too. Death like Martha had. And Ellen was definitely no stranger to it.]

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up.

[She wishes they had Time Lord symbols. In case The Master ever came back. Martha eyes it wistfully, wondering if she could bring the topic up with the Doctor. She doesn't notice the solitary tear that falls from her eye.]

[Ellen shrugs. Then she gets up, grabs a bottle of the moonshine and a couple of glasses. She puts the glass in front of Martha and pours a healthy dose of moonshine for the woman.]

Here, have a drink. If someone else needs you, they can call. Or Raphael can step up and be useful.

[She doesn't mind Raphael, but, this woman needs some downtime.]

[Martha started when the cup connected with the table in front of her. She hastily brushed away the tear and looked up at the older woman.]

Is it strong?

[Because drinking is the last thing she should be doing. Drinking while on duty would get her fired at home. And she won't be able to take proper care of people if she's drunk. And because she really, really wants that drink.]

[Ellen snorts.]

Strong enough I made Balthazar and Castiel try it before I let humans have any.

[She nudges the drink toward Martha.]

No one is screaming about needing help, and it looks like we got off pretty light. Raphael knows how to heal, and there's more than a few of us that can do everything but surgery almost blind drunk and beaten to hell.

[Martha takes another second before making a decision and downing the entire glass in a gulp. It's not hypervodka, but it sure is good.]

Surgery beaten to hell I can do. Surgery while malnourished, running on no sleep, and with hardly any supplies, I can do. I've never tried it drunk.

Don't let me drink the next one so fast.

[Ellen just pours her a second drink.]

Don't worry. It'll only kill most of your liver. And it won't cause kidney damage according to the angels.

[Ellen sips her own.]

It's not as bad as hypervodka. Granted, I'm pretty sure humans weren't meant to drink hypervodka.

[Martha takes a sip of the second drink and lets her shoulders relax.]

Never had hypervodka. We ever get the still up and running again and I'll make vodka. Or Poítin. But feeding folks comes first.

[She's used to working with very little.]

Oh no.

[Martha smiled a bit. Dark smile, but it's there.]

Didn't mean make anything else. This is brilliant. Bloody brilliant. You won't fine hypervodka on Earth anyway. Not for many many years at least.

Feeding folks always comes first. That and fresh water.

Are you kidding? Running the still keeps me sane and helps me not think about leeching lye and making soap.

[Ellen hates making soap. A lot. She will eat ashes before she likes making soap.]

Water shouldn't be too hard. Boil it, sure, but if we have to, we can set up something like the still to make clean water. Pain, but possible.

[Martha wrinkles her nose at the prospect of making soap.]

There are a lot of things I would prefer to be doing than making soap. Besides, alcohol pulls double duty when times get bad.

If this earthquake knocked out our water supply, I'm sure that would be useful.

Stuff isn't going to last forever. I've already got the leeching barrel set up. Won't be too hard.

[She just doesn't want to do it. Ever. She hates it.]

If it did, Jo and I will fix the still. Last batch was ruined anyway.

[Martha nods but her eyes wander back to the demon trap at the door.]

Did you guys ever deal with aliens too?

[She sounds weary and a little far away as she asks it.]

Nope. Demons, ladies in white. Everything and anything that goes bump in the night. Satan, angels, everything else? sure. Aliens weren't our thing.

[Because that makes sense.]

[Martha's face tightens in something akin to disappointment with Ellen's answer.]

They don't exist in my world. Not that I know of. All the weird things we get are aliens.

[Ellen's just going to pour them both more to drink. They both need it.]

Probably isn't that far off. Ours are our own monsters, yours come from somewhere else.

Most of ours aren't monsters. But every once in a while, you run into a bad one. Sometimes a really bad one... I was wondering if there were alien traps like that. They'd work better than the series of tripwires I currently have set up.

Can't help you there.

She nods to the symbols.]

These'll keep out or trap anything supernatural, but extra terrestrial isn't in my repertoire.

[Martha shrugs.]

Just thought I'd ask. He's disappeared anyway. Which is a very good thing.

[Ellen pours them both more booze. Martha looks like she needs it.]

You've got someone specific in mind.

[Martha fingers the tumbler. The alcohol makes her want to talk, but what sense she still has left isn't sure yet.]

Let's just say I was taken at an inopportune moment. And not given much relief once I got here.

[Ellen huffs out a laugh.]

I was taken right after I blew up a hardware store full of hellhounds. There isn't an opportune time, in my book.

[Martha watches Ellen carefully, looking for signs that it's a trip. But no one would joke about something like that. Right? Still, there's a moment before she actually starts talking.]

I... I had to stop a man... an alien... from destroying the world. While he hunted me.

[Ellen pours herself more, leaving the bottle between them.]
