[ A lie would have been to say the Soldier hadn't put any thought to the whereabouts to Natalia. But the better response was that those who resided in the Red Room. When Black Widow had gone -- the next flight risk was a simple one to weed out. Winter Soldier. Where Black Widow went he would naturally follow. They had made sure their next most efficient killer would not leave them especially since Winter Soldier had been rebellious at the start. His history did not make them any easier on him. ]

Does SHIELD finally trust you enough to leave you alone with me? [ He paused as his shoulders squared, eyes never straying from her. Granted from what he observed...he knew the answer was a resounding 'no'. ]

( She wasn't ready for this. Maybe she would never be ready for this. She had come to SHIELD broken, and they had remade her. She knew that made her different from the others. She knew there were some even now who would never trust her, who would always see her as a liability. There were those would would forever feel that Clint and Coulson and Fury had mad a mistake, that Clint would have killed her when he had the chance. Standing here she wondered if maybe they were right. Because part of her would give anything for the man in front of her. And that was dangerous. But she also thought that they would say the same things about him. And she knew he wasn't beyond saving. Just as she hadn't been. )

I'm not here for SHIELD, James. ( That much, at least, was true. For a given value of truth. She stepped closer to him, eyes on his. She knew this was dangerous, but she couldn't help but hope she still meant something to him. Enough that he wouldn't try to kill her. ) I did what I had to do. But that doesn't mean I didn't regret leaving you.

[ Winter Soldier started moving, a pattern that Natalia would be able to see through as he began circling around her. He knew she wouldn't let her back get to him -- she was too smart for that. Better than him because of that because out of everything telling him he should kill her all he wanted to do was reach his hand out to her to touch her. To make sure she was physically real and not one of the many ghosts that came to visit him in the dead of night. ]

I expected not, Natalia. [ He stopped, moving a bit closer to her and inspecting her quietly. ] You ran away and now your past chases after you. [ He could see it in her eyes. His past haunted him as well. ] I can't imagine that it's easy for you.

[ He paused for a moment, quietly musing. ] Did you know there are two of you here?

( They kept getting closer, constantly shifting as he moved around her and she turned to keep her eyes on him. No matter how much she cared about him, she would never be foolish enough to give him her back. She had no way of knowing how deep the Red Room's claws were in him, and she couldn't take that risk. Finally, she moved into his space, resting her hand lightly on his chest. He was real. She'd been somewhat worried he wasn't. )

I ran away from them, not you. ( It was an important distinction as far as she was concerned. ) But...it is difficult. I...

( She stopped herself. ) I did not know that.
