003 | Chuck Shurley | Day 93

[ Good evening, Kore! Amidst all of the new arrivals that have been showing up is a familiar face. Or, well, it would be a familiar face if he hadn't been missing for about three weeks.

Chuck Shurley is standing on the edge of town, looking completely baffled and confused. Like he'd just found himself there without knowing how or why, and so he just... stopped walking. He's tired and he's sore and honestly, he doesn't feel all that great. All he wants to do is crawl into bed and sleep for a few days. He rubs his forehead and he blinks down at the communicator at his wrist for a few seconds. ]

So I, uh... I think I was just kidnapped? By... the scientists?

[ And if he sounds unsure, it's only because he is. It's like trying to remember a dream he had years ago - everything's all fuzzy. ]

[She squints a little. That's a weird thing to say, though being from the same world technically explains it, except for the fact that they've never met.

Oh. Wait. Oh.]

Chuck? Are you the Chuck that wrote the Supernatural books?

[ Contrary to popular belief, Chuck does not, in fact, see every single moment of Sam and Dean's life. He more or less gets the cliffnotes version. For example, he hadn't been aware that Ellen had Jo had known about him, or the supernatural books at all. As thus, he's surprised when Jo brings them up. ]

Oh, uh, yeah. That's me.

You have a couple of fans here.

[She's using the term loosely, for what it's worth. Most of what she's heard about the books has been from Charlie -- which made their initial meeting pretty interesting, seeing as Charlie already knew all kinds of things about her.]

I heard I got a pretty flattering portrayal. According to a friend, at least.

Yeah, I... I know.

[ Chuck grimaces. If by "fans" you mean Becky and the actual cast of his books then yes, he does have a "couple fans".

He's quite aware of Sam and Dean's feelings on the subjects of his books, and he can only assume what Jo's opinion on the matter is. He almost feels the need to apologize but really, it isn't his fault. He didn't ask to be a prophet and, at the very least, the books made enough money to keep a roof over his head and fed until the Apocalypse. They weren't worth much more than that, but it was something. ]

Yeah, well... I mean, you're one of the good guys, right?

I like to think so, anyway. Tried my damndest to earn the title.

[Died for it and everything.

She smirks wryly.]

I should probably even thank you. Apparently, I've got fans. [Namely Charlie. It only makes their budding friendship slightly awkward.] Closest to stardom a hunter like me is ever going to get, right?

You are. [ He nods. ] Trust me.

[ And not just because she died for it. She was on the Winchester's side. She fought with them, never against them. She fought monsters and demons and that was what made her a hero. He gets the outside view. He knows these things.

But, at the end of the day, Chuck knows that his fans aren't really his fans. And he doesn't just mean Sam or Dean or Becky or anything. With everything he'd written being real and not made up, he knows that people who are fans of him, are really fans of Sam or Dean or Castiel or Jo or anyone that wasn't himself, really.

He'd written himself into the book, sure, but even Becky, who he dated, wasn't really that much of a fan of his. She was a fan of Sam. ]

Yeah, well, I mean... the fans, they might not know you're real, but... they still like you and what you do. And, uh, if they did know you were real, I bet they'd better appreciate what it is you do.

I mean, I know I do.

How much of it have you actually seen, anyway?

[She's never had the opportunity to read one of the books, but she gets the general gist of how it works, anyway. She smiles a little, genuine.]

Just curious. Do you just get the cliff's notes version of everything that goes on, or is it like a full-on motion picture?

Oh, no, it's...

[ He drags his hands down the side of his face because it's complicated is what it is. ]

It's pretty much the whole thing? I mean, yeah, it's kind of like a movie. I've, uh, had visions of Sam and Dean since 2005.

That's a lot of years of watching Days of our Winchesters.

[She resists the urge to whistle, though.]

Let me guess. You drink a lot.

[Knowing the things he must be seeing? It's inevitable, right?]

You ever need a little help on that front, my mom and I can hook you up. She's got the still working over at the old bar. Whipped the place back into shape.

[ He can't help but laugh, just at little at her assumption. Mostly because she's right. ]

Yeah, it's... really the only way I can get through it? I mean, I didn't even know everything was real until last year, but...

[ But demons and vampires and monsters. Not to mention the migraines that come with the visions themselves. He lost count of how many alcohol bottles he'd gone through. ]

That would be great. I met your mom briefly before I met, but, uh, certainly won't turn down free alcohol, right?

I always hear that a lot of writers drink, and most of them don't have visions to worry about. Can't say I blame you.

[Not in the least, Chuck. He even gets a smile of sympathy.]

Hey, as long as people keep finding us ingredients, we'll keep making it. She's been turning out some pretty good moonshine.

Well, I mean... I was a writer before the visions, but they, uh, certainly didn't help.

[ He's not sure he'd call himself an alcoholic, not before the visions showed up anyways. Now... well, it became more of a coping mechanism than an actual addiction. ]

Yeah, no, she's already sent some to my house. And I certainly don't mind helping to find ingredients or anything.

Sounds like mom. One step ahead. Well, anything you can give us will certainly be appreciated. We'll pay you back in product.

I prob'ly shouldn't keep you. I'm guessing you're looking to get your bearings back and settle in now that you've made your way back, right? Not that it's a five-star resort or anything, but you know what I mean.

[ He gives a nod. ] Yeah, no, I'll keep an eye out for whatever I can.

Yeah, I've, uh, gotta go make sure my room is still a room. [ Raphael promised it would be, but chuck also lives in the same house as Gabriel, so Chuck won't believe anything until he sees it with his own eyes. ]

I'll, uh... see you around, then?

I'm sure you will. Not like any of us have anywhere else to go.

[She smiles wryly.]

[ He gives her a small smile back. ]

You too.

[ And with that, he ends the feed. ]
