[No. They really don't have time. Lydia's smile melts and she sighs.]

This is a public feed, Agent Carter. I haven't even begun to establish my social standing. We have no idea how long we're going to be here, and--

[Ugh. Uuuuugh. Okay, fine. People are depending on her. Working together could be the difference in rotting here in this glorified ditch of a town and getting back home to Jackson. The smile returns, albeit much smaller.]

I know quite a few. You'd be surprised how effective astronomy is at killing boredom. However, I'm much more familiar with chemistry, Latin, Archaic Latin, French, biology, astrophysics, and, of course, mathematics.

[Everything they do is public. Sharon sighs and rubs the bridge of her nose. And why the hell would social standing matter to anyone here? But oh, of course. The girl was young.]

I'm in the last house on the way to the dock on the left. Across from the bar.

Give me fifteen minutes to find a warmer jacket that goes with this outfit and I'll be there.

[It matters, Sharon. It really matters.

When she does show up, knocking on the door, she looks as flawless as ever.]

[Sharon checks who it is and pushes open the door.] Nice jacket. [Her tone is sarcastic, but scaled back.] Come on in.

How old are you again?

Thanks. [Either for permission to come in or the sarcastic jacket comment, because even if it was sarcastic... it is a nice jacket.]

Eighteen. Does that really matter? I can help.

I know you can. I'm trying to get more ideas for how. Eighteen means school. What classes are you taking?

[Eighteen means Sharon isn't going to put her anywhere near the front line if anything happens. She should probably get some self-defense lessons together for people. No telling when or how it might come in handy. And get the SHIELD people together for sparring. They were both familiar and yet strange to one another, but they'd have to work as a cohesive unit... So much to do, damn it.]

Irrelevant. I do most of my learning outside of class and float by easily on that basic curriculum. Most of my effort is put into running that school with a glamorous fist and looking amazing the entire time. I can hold an important and slightly threatening conversation while solving a so-called 'complicated' algebra problem. I'm just biding my time until university.

[And if Jackson can't get an athletic scholarship, he'll just buy his way in. Lydia smiles that slightly-sarcastic smile.]

They don't teach archaic Latin in high school. Astrophysics isn't a top-priority class, either. Has anyone tried pulling out the cables attached to the cameras to see where they go? You should really set up a lab or a workspace for this kind of thing.

[The girl is curt, and a tiny bit pompous, but Sharon's dealt with far worse. It's actually a relief to talk to someone who is confident in her abilities and has ideas for what to do.] People have been working on it, yes. So far, they haven't had much luck.

If you're interested, I have a task for you. I'll help when I can, but if you're as smart as you think you are, I'd like you to try.

[Only a tiny bit? Well, she is trying to make a good impression.]

What is it?

I noticed a library. It might have records on the town's history. [If the town even has any.] Maybe even some on the past residents. Someone might have thought to stick a journal or diary in there, too, that might tell us what might have happened here.

It'll be tedious, but I'm sure you can understand the necessity.

Do you know any self-defense?

[Put the high school student in a library. Will the cliches never end? Lydia's smile merely brightens and she tilts her head]

I understand perfectly. Hours spent pouring over dusty, old literature. What could be better?

If Tae Bo doesn't count, then no. I don't.

I know it sucks, and I'll try to get someone to help you when I can't do it myself. [But in the meantime, the girl is eighteen. Sharon isn't going to have her running around in the open where she can be hurt.]

[She nods toward the living room, pushing a coffee table out of the way.] I'm going to show you a couple things. It won't kill anybody who messes with you, but it'll give you time to run and get help. If someone or something here tries something, I don't want you trying to be a hero, got it?

I'm sure I could gather a few volunteers by just asking. There's no point in keeping any of this quiet, because I guarantee you, even if you destroy every camera in the vicinity, someone somewhere is picking up audio. Probably from these hideous wrist devices. Secrets won't stay secret here. Not until we leave.

[Which means there's no point in pretending she's just another pretty face. The sooner they figure this out, the sooner she gets back home to a normal life.]

... You definitely don't need to worry about me being a hero. I'm not hero material. [Are they actually going to fight right now? What the hell. She shrugs out of her jacket and steps out of her high-heeled shoes.]

Are you sure about this?

Believe it or not, that had occurred to me. [Sharon still needs to find a place to communicate without being watched, or a way to communicate that wouldn't be understood by their watchers. She and Natasha can communicate well enough on the sly, but no one else will necessarily be able to understand.

And yes, I'm sure. Whether we get attacked or not, I want to make sure you can defend yourself long enough to get away. Just a couple basics. [She stands in front of Lydia and holds up her hand. Slowly, she arcs her arm through the air toward Lydia's neck.] If someone tries something from the front, this move can make them pass out. You don't have to clench your fists, you don't even have to take much time to aim. Hitting them with your forearm will work just as well as hitting them with your hand. The goal is to hit the artery and interrupt blood flow to the brain. [Sharon drops her arm and takes a step back.] Let me see you do it. Don't actually hit me, though. It can make them woozy for a couple seconds, and ideally, it'll make them black out.

And if you want to work with more people, that's fine. I'd actually prefer it. [And then she won't have to worry about Lydia alone in a library, where anyone could attack from rows of books if she found something.

I know what happens when the blood flow is stopped. I'm not an idiot.

[This is ridiculous. This is crazy! This is... something she could stand to know a little more about.

Lydia does as instructed, mimicking the motion but not actually hitting her. Huh. Useful...]

How much force do you apply to break someone's nose?

I'm not going to teach you how to break someone's nose, Lydia. At least, not yet.

Here's another move that's easy. One leg between theirs, and kick. You don't have to demonstrate that you know that one, though, I'll trust that you can kick things in your own time. Now say you're running away or someone sneaks up behind you. [Sharon turns away and slowly swings an arm over her shoulder, again headed for Lydia's neck.]

Basically the same thing. You can catch them along any part of your arm, and it can still do damage.
