003 | Chuck Shurley | Day 93

[ Good evening, Kore! Amidst all of the new arrivals that have been showing up is a familiar face. Or, well, it would be a familiar face if he hadn't been missing for about three weeks.

Chuck Shurley is standing on the edge of town, looking completely baffled and confused. Like he'd just found himself there without knowing how or why, and so he just... stopped walking. He's tired and he's sore and honestly, he doesn't feel all that great. All he wants to do is crawl into bed and sleep for a few days. He rubs his forehead and he blinks down at the communicator at his wrist for a few seconds. ]

So I, uh... I think I was just kidnapped? By... the scientists?

[ And if he sounds unsure, it's only because he is. It's like trying to remember a dream he had years ago - everything's all fuzzy. ]

[ He gives her a small grin back, amused. ]

That's a good word for it, yeah. Bamboozled.

[ He has to think about it. Because his memories are kind of a mess right now, but he doesn't think he remembers anything to do with dreams. ]

No, I uh. At least, I don't remember anything to do with dreams.

Probably a good sign.

[She could have done without the creepy crystal city and the... people without faces. But at least no one had stumbled into her most invasive memories, which she's begun dreaming at a more alarming frequency.]

We should still have some alcohol in the bar, as well.

Yeah. I guess I can't exactly complain if I missed the scientists messing with all of us. I mean, at least I can't remember what the scientists did to me, you know?

[ Because wow, that doesn't sound like a fun experience at all. In fact, he's rather glad he wasn't around for his subconscious to run wild. ]

Yeah, I uh. Know the people who run the bar.

[ Well, know might be too strong of a term, but... ]

Oh, good. Then you should be set.

[She's been trying not to drink too much, herself, and mostly succeeding, simply because there's always been an irritating little footnote on her psych eval on substance abuse problems.]

So long as they leave us alone for a... week or so. That would be nice.

[ To be fair, though, it's not like they have a lot to do on this island when they aren't being put through traumatic experiences. And they bar's just there. It's hard not to take advantage of it.

He knows he's at the bar more than he should be. ]

Only a week? [ Not a very high bar, is it? ] If they could, you know, send us home, that'd be nice.

Well, yes, obviously I'd prefer that. But it doesn't really seem likely.

[How are they to know that the people who vanish are being sent home? They seem to come back, if they've been sent home.]

But some time to adjust between... experiments, is a nice reprieve.

[ If he was sent home in the past three weeks, he certainly doesn't remember it. But then, that begs the question of why some people get sent home and some people don't. ]

What do you think they're testing for, anyways? I mean, with all the experiments and stuff.

Hard to say. [She pauses thoughtfully.] Especially since no one has a clear memory of it. But there's certainly some merit to figuring out how people from different universes are put together. You know, in the mind of an amoral scientist.

Yeah, but... that doesn't mean they have to torture us.

It does if they want information we won't give them. [She shrugs.] But as no one seems to remember their contact with our illustrious hosts, it's hard to say.

[ He sighs. ]

I know, I just... don't see the point of any of this, is all. I guess.

I think that says a good thing about you. [Not seeing the use in torturing and kidnapping people, anyway.] I'm Fortescue, by the way.

[ Oh, a compliment. He gives a small smile. ]

Yeah, I, uh. Guess it does. Thanks.

I'm Chuck.

Nice to meet you, Chuck. I hope you feel less bamboozled soon.

Thanks. I, uh. Just think I need a drink and some sleep, really.

[Fortescue chuckles softly.]

Few things can't be solved by that combination.

It hasn't wronged me this far, you know?

I would hope not. They're one of the few things we have in this place.

[ He doesn't want to say "Thank God for that", because he's really not that vein, but. That's what he's thinking, that's what his face says. ]

I'm not sure I'd be able to cope with, uh... [ He gestures around. All of Kore, he means. ] ...this, otherwise.

Without sleeping and drinking? [Fortescue gives him a cagey sort of smile, and nods.] I'm right there with you.

[She's supposed to be home, fighting in the war and doing her job like she agreed. Protecting and keeping her little sister safe, like she promised, in any way that she can. Being captured has thrown a wrench into that.]

I just hope we get more food drops in the future.

[ He rubs at his forehead. ] Me too.

I mean, they can't expect us to starve, can they?

[ He's really hoping the answer to that is no. Because who knows what the scientists could be thinking? They're certainly torturing them. And it's depressing when starvation is actually a real consequence of being trapped here. ]

It would be a very short and fruitless experiment, in my mind, if that was their plan. [She shrugs a little. Who can say?] But we should be all right, I think. There's enough food to get by.

Yeah, no, I think we're still fine for now.

[ For now. He doesn't want to be pessimistic, but... it's kind of hard not to. ]

If it gets too much worse, we'll just have to have velociraptor steak.

[It's a joke (well, kind of) and she smiles in a teasing way.]

[ He takes it as a joke, (Because how would they even kill the dinosaur? Can you actually eat dinosaur?) and he gives a grin. ]

It'd probably taste like chicken.
